West Irondequoit CSD update from Aaron Johnson

October 29, 2021

Dear Families,

The FBI and Greece Police recently executed a search warrant at the home of West Irondequoit CSD school counselor, Scott Steinberg, due to suspected possession of downloaded child pornography. Upon receiving this information, we immediately placed Mr. Steinberg on administrative leave pending the outcome of the police investigation. Today, we learned that Mr. Steinberg has been charged with possessing and promoting child pornography. Based on the findings to date, Mr. Steinberg’s actions are not suspected to involve children locally.

The district will continue to cooperate with law enforcement and has initiated support and education provided by the Bivona Child Advocacy Center. Support services are available to students, families and staff through our district and Bivona. If you or your child are in need of immediate support, please contact your child’s principal (school directory) or call Bivona at (585) 935-7800. We also have attached a PDF, shared from the Bivona site, with tips on how to talk to your children about an event such as this.

Next week, we will give families an opportunity to meet with district leaders and Bivona staff via a video conference to process questions and share resources. We will share more details about that soon.

Please know that there is no higher priority for us than the safety of our students. Anyone with information specific to the investigation or concerns, should call Bivona. A trained professional can provide support, resources and guidance needed. To report abuse, call the NYS Abuse Hotline at (800) 342-3720 or submit a confidential message via this link.

Any district-related calls or emails regarding this matter should be directed to:

Sincerely,

Aaron R. Johnson, Ed. D
