Star Students
Mallette: Tyion has been setting a fabulous example for first grade behavior. He is showing his PAWS in everything he does. He has been on task, ready to learn, and willing to help his fellow classmates through the first week of school as they navigate new expectations.
Davis: Ki’miyah has displayed outstanding effort this month. She is focused and super determined to master all her learning objectives. She is working hard to master her number facts and has an amazing attitude about learning. She is an excellent team leader!!
Turner: Kamiyah is out student of the month! She has been setting a great example for her friends by always being kind and caring to all of her classmates. Kamiyah has also worked extremely hard to master new math skills and has continued to grow into an excellent reader. I can always depend on Kamiyah to be a good friend to all and an excellent student.
Drake: JaSiah is new to Chimborazo this year. He came to our school excited to learn and meet new friends. He puts pride in his work and displays respect for his teacher's as well as his peers. JaSiah is helpful and caring. He sets a great example for others each day.
What We're Learning
Language Arts:
1.9 f The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of fictional texts by identifying characters, setting, and important events.
1.7 The student will expand vocabulary and use of word meanings by using words from other content areas.
1.3 The student will orally identify, produce, and manipulate various phonemes within words to develop phonological and phonemic awareness.
Math:
1.6 The student will create and solve single-step story and picture problems using addition and subtraction within 20.
1.7 The student will a) recognize and describe with fluency part-whole relationships for numbers up to 10; and b) demonstrate fluency with addition and subtraction within 10.
1.15 The student will demonstrate an understanding of equality through the use of the equal symbol.
Social Science:
1.5 The student will develop map skills by
a) recognizing basic map symbols, including references to land, water, cities, and roads;
b) using cardinal directions on maps;
c) identifying the shapes of the United States and Virginia on maps and globes;
d) locating Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States, and Richmond, the capital of Virginia, on a United States map; and
e) constructing simple maps, including a title, map legend, and compass rose.
1.11 The student will recognize the symbols and traditional practices that honor and foster patriotism in the United States by demonstrating respect for the American flag by learning about the Pledge of Allegiance.
1.12 The student will recognize the symbols and traditional practices that honor the Commonwealth of Virginia by
a) identifying the Virginia flag, state capitol building, state bird, and state flower; and
b) describing why people have symbols and traditions.
Science:
1.5 The student will investigate and understand that animals, including humans, have basic needs and certain distinguishing characteristics. Key concepts include
a) basic needs include adequate air, food, water, shelter, and space (habitat);
