Brenchie’s Lab is a publicly accessible makerspace in Aruba,
aimed to bring open technologies for people to use freely
to create what they see as important.
The project was initiated by Metabolic Foundation and has been boosted tremendously by Ateliers ’89, the Academy of Fine Arts and Design Aruba, UNOCA, Stimuleringsfonds, Biblioteca Nacional Aruba, Futura Lab. Brenchie’s Lab continues to grow with support from the lovely people of Aruba and beyond. Its mission is to support the democratization of technology by fostering a shared space to experiment and work together towards a more inclusive and circular future of urban design. Brenchie’s Lab envisions an evolving set of community-managed spaces where everyone is part of the open source technology community, and where spaces function as incubators for community-based innovation that can be tested, co-developed, and implemented in cities around the world.
The beginnings of Brenchie’s were self-built by a group of interested folks in Aruba. In a collaboration with Ateliers ‘89 art academy and Colegio EPI technical school, a unique kind of workshop was held to build Aruba’s first fab lab with a group of 9 enthusiastic and creative participants. Together they were set out to build, diy-style, 4 machines to equip a basic fab-lab-ish workshop to be made accessible to the public. These included a 3D printer, a CNC router, a laser engraver, and a fume filter. The opportunity provided has attracted the young and the old with lots of success. http://brenchies.com/
In addition, a MOBILE MAKERSPACE has been created.
It is an innovative and sustainable project built in a bus, equipped with the latest technology, among them 3D printers, computers for coding, Internet-of-Things and robotics. The intention is that the bus will visit different schools to provide additional and different activities with opportunities to experiment. In so doing, youngsters are motivated to work in the future in technical opportunities.
A Collaborative Project for the Arubian Community
This is a project of the Government of Aruba, in collaboration with the Biblioteca Nacional Aruba, Futura Lab and Metabolic Foundation (known as Brenchie’s Lab). Thanks to the collaboration of Minister of Education dr. Armando Lampe, the dream is now a reality. The project is financed 75% from the European Union and 25% from the Government of Aruba. http://www.bibliotecanacional.aw/pages/mobile-makerspace/
