Principal's Weekly Update
December 3, 2021 Cumberland Regional HS
Sent to Student On Thursday
Colts,
First I want to thank the majority of you who have been patient and understanding with the mandates the State has handed down. The mask requirement is not our rule. Trust me wearing a mask is not something the staff enjoys but it is required and we are required by law to enforce it. I am always impressed and like to brag to other principals on how well behaved the majority of our Colts are. You do a great job, follow the rules and make the school a better place.
This week I have made time to be out in the halls between class changes. What I saw disappointed me. Unfortunately , even though we are now over three months into the school year we are still having issues with some students not wearing masks properly and/or being late to class/SERA. There is no excuse for not following the rules this late in the year.
Now, due to the small percentage of students who just refuse to follow simple and easy rules I am making a change. I have instructed the assistant principals that beginning on Monday December 6th, they are to have security do random sweeps throughout the day. Any student caught in the hallways after the bell has rung to begin class or SERA (without a pass) during one of these sweeps will be taken to the APs office and will receive a minimum of one after school detention. Refusal to go with the security guard will bump the infraction from being late to insubordination and you will be assigned at the minimum 1 in-school suspension.
There will also be no more warnings or conferences if a student is written up for a mask violation. At a minimum you will receive a written assignment which I will have sent to me. If I am not happy with it you will redo the assignment in after school detention.
For those of you who follow the rules this will not affect you. For the others, it is time for you to be held more accountable. Consider this your written warning on the changes. I will also be placing this in my newsletter home to your parents and guardians so they are also aware of the change.
I am sorry I have to do this but at this point there is no excuse for not wearing the mask properly or being late to class. Your teachers have enough work getting you all caught up from the time you missed due to COVID. They should not be wasting time on enforcing these simple infractions.
Once again a big thank you to those Colts who follow the rules.
