Student Safety - Top Priority in District 103
Dear District 103 Parents,
The tragic shooting in Texas has once again heightened discussions regarding school safety and how schools can continue to keep students safe. Student safety is our top priority in District 103, and we have taken many steps over the years to improve the safety in our buildings.
These steps include:
- Locking all outside doors while school is in session
Requiring all visitors to enter through secured front doors and check in at the school office
Installing security cameras inside and outside the buildings
Upgrading our fire and police emergency alarm systems
Working with local fire and police departments to annually update and improve our security measures
Train staff members on active shooter drills so they know how to respond in a crisis
Conduct safety drills with students throughout the year to practice what to do in case there is an emergency
We recommend the following when discussing news events with your children:
Limit their access to news media broadcasts.
Remain calm. Your children take their cues from you. If you are calm, they will be less anxious.
Listen and be sensitive to their feelings. Assure them that you and they are safe.
Answer questions with simple answers, reassuring them that school district employees are always working to keep them safe.
Watch for any behavior changes that your child may exhibit indicating they are under stress.
Inform your child's classroom teacher or school social worker of any concerns you may have with your child's behaviors so they can be a support for your child.
Please know that the safety of your children is our top priority. Thank you for partnering with us in raising your children in a safe and caring community.
Sincerely,
Scott Warren, Ed.D.
