A CATALYST FOR ACADEMIC SUPPORT
Middle school is a much more complex environment than grade school. The campus is larger, there are more students, and instead of one teacher and one classroom, your child will have a separate instructor, and classroom, for each subject or block of subjects (e.g., language arts/social studies or math/science). It’s no wonder kids worry about finding their way in this new world. East Lee Middle School believes that a key indicator of a successful middle school experience is a positive transition from elementary school. This year, 6th grade students that need additional support transitioning to middle school will be provided with a SWAT Coach. The SWAT coach will:
- ensure that each student is known well at school by at least one adult who is that youngster's advocate (coach);
- guarantee that student belongs to a peer group;
- help students find ways of being successful within the academic and social options the school provides;
- promote communication and coordination between home and school.
To Make Science Real, Kids Want More Fun
For most students, science is still defined by textbook chapter assignments on Monday and vocabulary quizzes on Friday. Unfortunately, only about one out of ten classrooms give students an opportunity to experience science in an interactive way. East Lee Middle School teachers are working to change that. Mr. Baer, Mr. Webb, and Mrs. Thompson attended an Essentially Physical Science workshop the week of July 11th. All week, ELMS teachers have been learning new Vernier force probes and software to be used during science labs. This training provides inquiry based teaching and learning. Through this process, students focus on a central question that drives curiosity and personal passions. Through these labs, students will seek answers through research, experimentation, and data analysis.
NEW- 2016-2017 Parent Advisory Committee
The Parent Advisory Committee is comprised of parent representatives from each grade level at East Lee Middle School. Meetings will be held quarterly with the Principal. Members work together to:
- Identify common needs and goals among the parents of students enrolled at ELMS and facilitate strategies to increase the efficiency and effectiveness.
- Provide the principal with feedback and insight from the parent’s perspective on school process, policies and initiatives to ensure that the needs of parents and their families are included as decisions are made in the school.
- Bring to the principal's attention existing and emerging issues expressed by parents.
- Serve as an advisory, not a decision-making body, that makes recommendations, encourages brainstorming and provides opportunities for parent involvement on committees.
- Serve as a forum for sharing innovations and best practices.
