The J-Hawk Experience!
Info you need to know for week of October 1 - 5!
Message from the principal
I'd like to announce that UHS seniors, Varun Vepa and Cole Janssen, have been named as Semifinalists in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program and have the opportunity to continue in the National Merit Scholarship Competition with finalists being selected in February of 2019. They are among the top 16,000 students of the 1.6 million students in the country who took the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
Also, UHS senior, Ethan Holub, has been named a Commended Student in the program. Although he will not continue in the 2019 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, he and other Commended Students placed among the 50,000 scorers who took the 2019 PSAT/NMSQT.
Varu, Cole, and Ethan, are pictured below in Mr. Hermon's classroom.
Current UHS students interested in taking the 2018 PSAT test in an attempt for the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program should sign up in the UHS counseling office by Wednesday, October 2. For more details, see the article below in the UHS Newsletter.
Thank you also to UHS teachers and staff who have supported these students (and others) and helped bring learning to life for them...and for all! Congratulations to all of these boys for their hard work thus far in achieving this great recognition and best wishes to Varun and Cole as they attempt to become finalists!

Lunch Schedule 5th period (6th period on Wednesdays)
5A Lunch - 11:38 - 12:03
5A Class - 12:08 - 12:49
5B Class - 11:38 - 12:19
5B Lunch - 12:24 12:49Exciting changes to UHS for fall 2018 with I.E.S.!
As we continue to expand and enhance opportunities for access to teachers to support learning, UHS is rolling out some exciting changes to support students learning by adding I.E.S. (Intervention, Extension, Study table) between 3rd and 4th per
iods on Fridays, Mondays, and Tuesdays. We continue to have a modified-block schedule (8 classes on Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and 4 block periods on Wednesday and Thursday along with Connections).
However, we have created time in school day on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays, to have guaranteed access for teachers to have with students. We are reallocating time from 5th period (in past years 11 minutes longer than all other periods in the day) along with using Connections time to create additional time on those days.
Students started signing up using an online program called FlexiSCHED on Thursdays, starting on Thursday, September 12th, during Connections for their I.E.S. time for the next three days (Friday, Monday, Tuesday). A student will attend the same location during that three day cycle and then sign up the following Thursday for a new offering for the upcoming Friday, Monday, and Tuesday cycle. This process will repeat each week.
Students will continue to review this process to sign up for I.E.S. in Connections as they sign up for I.E.S each Thursday in Connections. Students can sign up for I.E.S. sessions between 9:20am-1:00pm each Thursday for the upcoming cycle (Friday, Monday, Tuesday).
UHS to host PSAT - Wesdensday, October 10
The PSAT will be given at UHS on Wednesday, October 10, from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm. This is a practice test for the SAT and is also the entrance exam of the National Merit Scholarship program for students in the class of 2020. The test is available to any junior, sophomore or freshman student, with priority given to junior students who register by October 2nd.
The PSAT is also the entrance exam for the National Merit Scholarship program. Juniors who score in the top 3% nationally (approximately) are entered into the National Merit competition. This is one of the highest academic honors a student may receive. This link provides more information: National Merit Scholarship Program
*The SAT is a different test than the ACT. The majority of our students take the ACT rather than the SAT. Both are standardized exams that 4-year colleges and universities require for admittance. Here is a link that describes the differences between the two tests: ACT vs. SAT Comparison
Freshmen and sophomores will be placed on a wait-list and will be notified on October 3 whether or not they will test. The cost is $17, payable by cash or check to UHS. Seating is limited.
All students desiring to test should register with Mrs. Gibson in the counseling office as soon as possible. See your counselor with questions.
This week is National German Week!
A note from Frau Lubbers, UHS German teacher:
This week is National German Week!
Monday is Schwarz-Rot-Gold Day. Wear your black, red, and gold or another German-themed piece of clothing (soccer jersey, city t-shirt, soccer scarf, etc.) and see Frau Lubbers in room 211 to be entered to win a prize!
Tuesday is German-American Culture Day. Your challenge is to find at least 5 staff members at UHS who have German heritage or are from Germany and take selfies with each of them. Collect your 5 selfies by Friday and see Frau Lubbers to be entered for another prize!
Wednesday through Friday celebrate German unity, teaching German, and German-American business connections. Be sure to stop outside of Frau Lubbers' room to guess the amount of Euros in the jar. The person with the closest guess without going over will win a prize freshly imported from Germany!

A note from Silver Cord Committe to UHS students - UPDATE September 25
Silver Cord students -- you are all AMAZING! So far this school year, you have performed over 4,000 hours of service, which is over half of what you did for the whole school year last year! The Class of 2022 is off to a roaring start, performing 1808 hours since June. We are so excited to see all the good you can do in an entire year!
We have lots of fun activities coming up -- fall parties, park and yard cleanup events, child care, homework help for elementary and middle school students, and food pantry needs. Check out the Silver Cord information site (there are 6 pages!) for details. Some of these opportunities can be done every week, which is a great way to earn your hours while building relationships.
If you haven't started earning hours, it's easy! Find an opportunity on our site, or find your own. Print off an hours verification form (attached) before you go. Do the service, and before you leave, fill out the form and have an organizer sign it. Turn it in to the UHS Main Office, and watch your hours grow while you do great things for your community!
Remember, if you have over 40 hours of service recorded on the Silver Cord Ladder, go visit Mrs. Strong in Room 212 to pick up your FREE Silver Cord volunteer t-shirt!
As always, we are here to answer any questions you have. Feel free to reach out, and keep on doing good!
