Message from Principal Collins
Hello Parents, Guardians and Caregivers,
I want to say thank you to all the parents/guardians who have ensured that our pickup lines have moved quickly. Thank you, parents, for keeping the driveways and mailboxes clear. Please be sure to help us continue a positive relationship with our neighbors whose homes surround our school. Remind your students if they walk to keep trash from entering our neighbor’s property.

I have some very exciting news for our families.
El Centro De La Raza’s ‘Roberto Maestas After School Program’ in Federal Way focuses on providing a safe community for our middle school youth. A space where scholars are inspired to learn through curiosity, truth, and vulnerability. The youth served meet every weekday after school to engage in cultural enrichment, leadership, and identity workshops. ‘Roberto Maestas After School Program’ makes sure to engage families and caregivers. Our program aims to see students throughout all three years of middle school and supporting them throughout their academic journey.
Finally, please be sure to save the dates section in our newsletter. It has some very important information about some awesome upcoming events. We want to increase our community’s participation in events here at the school for students and families. It is critical that you feel and know you as families are also a part of this school.
I look forward to a productive year and continued great energy from staff and scholars!

Is My Child a Visual Learner?
Welcome back to this space! My name is Dr. Zach Groshell, and I am the instructional coach at Evergreen Middle School. This week, I am going to be talking about the research on how students take in and experience information during lessons.
It used to be believed that children can be sorted into categories: Visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners. It was thought that if we give “visual learners” auditory materials, and “auditory learners” visual materials, their “learning style” won’t be honored, and they will learn less. For years, teachers tried out this method, and scientists tried to prove that this theory was real. Most of us seem to believe we have a particular learning style, and we can all remember a time when a teacher didn’t teach something in a way that made sense for us. Although it feels intuitive, after decades of studying learning styles, cognitive scientists have come to a rather surprising consensus: Tailoring instruction to so-called learning styles doesn’t work and learning styles do not exist. There are many resources on the “learning styles myth”, including the rather entertaining video below.
The truth is – and this is powerful - your child doesn’t have a learning style because they are all three learning styles! They require visuals, spoken language, and movement and gestures to understand the tricky material in our curriculum. The best teachers do not force students to learn in one modality; they carefully and expertly blend modalities! An important part of my job as instructional coach, therefore, is to help teachers to incorporate visuals and multimedia into their lessons, and to encourage the appropriate use of hands-on materials to help make abstract information more concrete. While learning styles might not exist, rest assured that we are constantly innovating and revising our instruction here at Evergreen to ensure that all students have equitable access to the challenging content in our curriculum.

Join us as we celebrate the completion of the new Evergreen Middle School!
We are ready to officially celebrate the completion of the new Evergreen Middle School with a ribbon-cutting program. Join us for this exciting event on Wednesday, October 12, from 4-5:30 p.m., which will also celebrate the completion of our feeder school, Star Lake Elementary.
The construction of Evergreen was made possible by voter approval of the 2017 school construction bond. Now that the school has been completed and is occupied by scholars and staff, we are excited to showcase the new building to the community.
The joint ribbon cutting will start promptly at 4 p.m., featuring members of the Evergreen community, Superintendent Dr. Pfeiffer, and government officials. Following the program, 20-minute community tours will be offered at both Evergreen and Star Lake to showcase the innovative buildings.
