Third Maceri makes the grade for West Point

It was toward the end of her Advanced Placement biology class and Emily Maceri was checking her candidate portal with the United States Military Academy. When she saw the large green box that confirmed her appointment, a huge smile broke out on her face.

A good friend sitting next to her noticed and asked what was up. A buzz quickly circulated the class with the exciting news. Emily’s fellow students offered congratulations on the offer to attend West Point. “I was so over the moon,” she said. I was just in shock.”

She called her mom, dad and older sister. “Word spread very fast,” she said.

QE's incredible effort raises $12,000 for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Quakertown Elementary School raised a record $12,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

During the six-week fundraiser for the LLS Hero Squad Program, which raises money for childhood blood cancer patients, QE shattered its goal of $2,021.

“This has certainly been a silver lining in a difficult school year caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,” Principal Dr. Michael Zackon said. “For the past six weeks, helping others less fortunate than ourselves has been something that our kids have been looking forward to and asking about. It has kept smiles on the kids’ faces, behind the masks.”

'Leader in Me' newsletter highlights RES

The "Leader In Me" in Pennsylvania newsletter has highlighted the efforts of Richland Elementary School to adapt to challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The February issue states "Leveraging the Districts Seesaw platform for elementary workflow and communication, this team of grades K-5 has established its own 'class' within Seesaw. Now student leaders who experience school in-person or virtually can assemble, survey, and blog virtually as a team, 24 hours a day to continue their leadership roles established in previous years. All while meeting health and safety requirements. Up first on their agenda,

deciding how to allocate money from the previous years fundraising efforts to enhance our RES learning community. After that, they plan to provide student perspective and leadership on a number of school-wide efforts, including International Week and several upcoming Service Projects aimed to support the needs in their community. This approach has bridged communication with our in-person and full virtual learners and highlights the efforts of our Richland student leaders!"

Great accomplishment everyone!!!

Strayer students participate in research study on school climate

Strayer Middle School students will be taking part in an exciting study that focuses on improving school climate and healthy technology use and emotions at school.

The study, from the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, uses resources from its inspirED Leadership Program to support middle and high school students to create positive change in their schools and communities.

YCEI, according to its website, is developing the School Climate Walkthrough tool, an innovative, web-based measure of school climate that provides an instant reading of students’ perceptions of their school’s safety, teaching quality, environment, and relationships alongside actionable next steps.

Strayer holds its largest ever spelling bee

Strayer Middle School’s largest-ever Spelling Bee (60 students!) went into overtime with Landen Burns winning the competition by spelling the word “obeisance.”

“This was a great competition for the students and I’m very proud of all of them,” said Kadishe Stoudt, Strayer’s Spelling Bee coordinator. “Congratulations to Landen! I was quite surprised he could spell that. It’s not an easy word to spell.”

Dylan Atlee-Wood was 7th-grade winner and second-place finisher. Goda Minasamudram was the 8th-grade winner.

The competition lasted more than two hours, Mrs. Stoudt beamed as she stressed, “we went through the 150-word list and then needed bonus words to complete the Spelling Bee.”

New club makes positive difference at Strayer

A new club at Strayer Middle School put its own spin on Read Across America Week.

The recently formed Social Justice Alliance created videos for each school day, sharing books that highlight diversity. Each day before dismissal, Strayer teachers showed the video in each classroom. They spoke of the importance of seeing ourselves in the book characters but also to learn about the lives of people who are different from us.

“They did an amazing job,” SJA advisor Kate Fetterolf said of her students. “It’s their mission to embrace and celebrate diversity and they wanted to share that with their classmates.”

Student videos were made by Jillian Wehrheim, Melanie-Rose Wentum, Hailey Disabella, Isabella DeJesus and Noah Wassmer. Teacher Shawn Storm and Mrs. Fetterolf also each recommended a book in their videos.
