National Handwashing Awareness Week

December holds National Handwashing Awareness Week. Who knew this was a thing? However, this is a great time to review not only the importance of frequent handwashing, but proper handwashing techniques. Washing hands thoroughly with soap and water is very important to stopping the spread of germs. However, I often see students who do a quick pass through the water and call it good. It can be helpful to reinforce to them the importance of using soap, scrubbing all parts of the hands including between the fingers and under the fingernails, and then rinsing off all the bubbles. And don’t forget to turn the faucet off using a paper towel or elbow and avoid grabbing the germ infested handle with clean hands. Ewwww……
