An Post RAS Stage Finish in Carlow!
To commemorate the fortieth anniversary of Mike O'Donaghue winning the Ras Tailteann in 1973 the 2013 An Post Rás will have a stage finish into Carlow town on the afternoon of May 24th. The riders will be expected in Carlow from approximately 2.15pm. The finish line will be on Barrack Street (Carpenters Pub). That evening Carlow County Museum will launch a new exhibition 'Mike the Man of the Rás '73'.
Having a Stage finish in Town brings a great spend locally and hotels and B&B's are heavily booked for the event. It's sure to attract lots of visitors to Town and there will be a great festival atmosphere.
Mike is the only Carlow man to have won the Rás and he was the first cyclist from the South East to do so. With his distinctive Carlow tri-colour jersey Mike was one of the most recognisable cyclists of his era. Mike was also the first Irish cyclist to have a sponsor, Carlow’s famous mineral water company Corcoran & Co. Ltd.
On Friday May 24th over 170 riders will cycle just over 154kms from Mitchelstown, Co Cork to the finish line on Barrack Street in Carlow Town. This will be the second longest stage of this years An Post Rás with the cyclists passing through counties Cork, Tipperary, Kilkenny and Laois. The cyclists will descend from Killeshin onto the northern relief road then onto Dr. Cullen Park Road, turn right onto Green Lane and then onto the finish line on Barrack Street. The lead riders that afternoon will be reaching speeds of near 50kms per hour on the final sprint. The riders will be expected in Carlow from approximately 2.30pm (traffic restrictions will be in place).
On Saturday May 25th at 10.30am after a parade from the Greenbank car park, around by Courtplace and down Dublin Street the cyclists will depart from the Post Office on Burin Street passing along Kennedy Avenue, Barrack Street, Staplestown Road and onto the Tullow Road. The peleton will travel across the county and into Tullow and will head towards Shillelagh. The stage end will be in Naas via after they have climbed the Wicklow Mountains!
Thanks to Carlow Town Council, Carlow County Council and the Carlow Sports Partnership who assisted Carlow County Museum in securing the arrival of the An Post Rás into Carlow town. The exhibition 'Mike the Man of the Rás '73' will run from May 24th to October 31st 2013, free Admission to the Museum.

RETAIL FORUM
Co Carlow Chamber would like to invite you to a meeting to discuss Retailing in Carlow Town. The meeting will take place in the Leinster Room, Talbot Hotel on Thursday May 30th starting at 7pm.
These are unprecedented times for retailers, as a stroll down our main streets will confirm. Many retailers find themselves in a precarious and lonely place. There is an urgent need for all of us to work together and this meeting can be a starting point. Taking a back seat is an option few of us can afford to take.
Our Agenda is simple:
Where are we now?
Where are we going?
How are we going to get there?
Are you willing to get involved?
We ask you to consider these four simple questions in advance of the meeting; come with an open mind and please contribute as we need to hear your views.
An initial steering Committee has been put in place consisting of John Brophy, Joe Tully, Eoin Kehoe, Michael Doyle, Sean Swan, PJ Hickson and Turlough O Brien.
A retail survey form has been posted and we would ask you to complete it and bring it with you to the meeting or post it to our Office. The survey is anonymous – we don’t need names but would like location to give us relevant demographic information.
Looking forward to seeing you in the Talbot,

Special Offer to Chamber Members
The Man in the Woman’s Shoes is written by performed Mikel Murfi & the will be performing on Friday 24th of May @ 8pm in The GB Shaw Theatre, Carlow.
Special offer to Co Carlow Chamber Members of €5 per ticket.
A great night out at a terrific price.
It's October 1978. Pope John Paul 1 is not long dead , autumn is closing in and Pat Farnon has 'some business' to do in town. The Man in the Woman's Shoes follows Pat as he walks the 5 miles from his wee white cottage to twon and back again and the marvels he meets along the way. "Today is beginning to feel very special and I've no idea why". It's a charming encounter - an ageing man still with a boundless enthusiasm for life. Hilariously funny, tender and at times downright daft, it will leave you uplifted and in love with life again!!
To avail of the offer simply call the Box Office (059 9172400) or call in & mention that you are a member of County Carlow Chamber.
