Mesmerism: or to most people hypnotism
Hypnosis: The induction of a state of consciousness in which a person apparently loses the power of voluntary action and is highly responsive to suggestion or direction. Its use in therapy, typically to recover suppressed memories or to allow modification of behavior by suggestion, has been revived but is still controversial.
Animal Magnetism: Supposed emanation to which the action of hypnotism was ascribed.

Today even though it is controversial hypnotism is used in therapy to bring suppressed memories back so that way they may be fixed by the therapist or brought to attention to the patient. It is used by people to make people do things against their will as well.
