Classroom News

Mrs. Embretson, January 31

Week at a glance...

Reading: We continued learning about the main idea of non-fiction text. This went hand-in-hand with our writing lessons this week. We finished up the sight word poem from the week before and started a new one. The words we focused on were this, that, because they, with, and me. If your child brought back his/her "Take-home" book I sent a new one home on Friday.

Writing: I introduced informative writing this week. We learned the difference between a fact and an opinion. Each student wrote a fact about our classroom. I put the pages together to make a class book. During small group instruction I am teaching various reading strategies to help them decode unknown words.

Math: As we finish up unit 3, we continue to focus on teen numbers, adding, subtracting, and partners for numbers 6-10. We will do our Unit 3 test next week.

Social Studies/Science/Health: We learned more about fun with ice and snow and we started a science unit on the solar system.

Reminders & Important Information

The winner of the penny war was Dr. Engelhart. She dressed up like a Minion and danced to the Minion YMCA song during movie night on Friday! That's school spirit!

Mr. Crouch's class is collecting new or gently used shoes for Sole Food.

January 25-February 3 each building has been challenged by People Helping People of Republic to host a "Souper Bowl" aka a soup drive contest between classes! The class (PRIDE in secondary buildings) that brings in the highest number of packaged soups in each building will be awarded with Super Bowl-type snacks on Friday, February 5. While all canned goods are awesome to have, there's a real shortage of canned soup. Thank you for your support.

Friday, February 12, PTO Friendship Party. Kindergarten will celebrate their parties 12-1pm. Our 3rd grade buddies are helping us make Valentine boxes. I will send home a class list next week if you want to put names on cards. Most kids simply bring in enough cards for the class, only filling in the "from" section. Makes it much easier when passing them out.

Box Top contest ends February 25. Our class collected the most during the month of January. Keep those Box Tops coming!
