Mrs. Wilson's Language Class
February 1-5
6th Grade
Tuesday we started to look at the theme of the students short stories. They will be using the same short stories that they used for their character essay to write a thematic essay. In order to write an essay on theme, they worked on finding a good theme for their short story with their reading group.
Wednesday the students re-read their story with the focus of finding evidence to back up what they thought the theme was of their story. Once they found evidence, they started to fill out an outline to help organize their thoughts.
On Thursday, the students took the hour to construct a rough draft of their essay.
Friday we looked closer at refining out introductory and conclusion paragraphs.
Next week, we will spend time revising the rest of our rough drafts. We will be focusing specifically on the transitions, quoting techniques, and analyzing their evidence.
7th Grade
Tuesday the students started to brainstorm different ideas/topics that they could expand on for their companion book.
Wednesday we looked at different structures that they can use to get some of their information across. Some students got more ideas for what to include once they saw examples of the structures.
Thursday we looked at an example companion text. This sample text goes along with a short story that we read titled, "The Stolen Party". The students were to read the text to look at the writing and how they can model their companion book chapters after the example.
Friday students discussed with their book groups what strategies they saw ans how they can use them in their own book. They were then given an outline to start to organize their thoughts for one of their companion book chapters.
Maternity Leave Update
As many of you know our family is expecting another child. Due to complications, I will be delivering our baby early and will be out a little longer than expected. We have learned that we will not be bringing our baby home from the hospital. I appreciate your well wishes and concern during this difficult time. My family also wishes to keep the remaining details private, thank you for understanding.
Mrs. Skelton and I are working on finding a substitute that is most suitable to take over a Language Arts classroom. We will let you know as soon as we find that person.
My leave will start February 15 and I will be out until the beginning of May. Due to my absence, I would like all late work in by February 12 so that I can have it graded before my leave starts. This way the students will have a fresh start with the substitute.
