Bulldog Bulletin- Weekly eNews
Here is what's on top at Buena Vista! 2/17/2022
Note from the Principal
Good Afternoon Buena Vista Parents,
I hope you have all started a long weekend and have been able to enjoy this beautiful weather with your family. Our support for WCEF's Turn Up the Heat was very successful. We almost made our 65% goal...we are 25 red envelopes short of a Bull Dog Lunch Dance Party...if they trickle in next week, we will make that party happen!! Way to go Bulldogs!
Today while you & your students were at home (or off having big adventures!), our teachers and staff engaged once again in a day of professional learning. We continue our series with presenters from Epoch Education, Thriving as a Racially Conscious Individual. If you are interested in this topic as well, I encourage you to join us for the parent session hosted on Zoom next week, February 23, at 6:30pm. More information below.
Student Learning
This week I was able to drop into library with Mrs. Johnson while Ms. Shannon's third grade class was there. I was so excited to see her reading a new book from our library, Hair Love, written by Matthew A. Cherry. This story is about a dad's love for his daughter and his struggle with trying to help her with a special hair style...it's more difficult than he thought...but he doesn't give up! This book celebrates loving yourself and ALL of the parts that make you, well, you. It is one of many books added to our school library this year to support diversity, equity and inclusion in our school and classrooms. (I also want to add that Mrs. Johnson's face lit up when she received her second shipment of books later this same week. See our new titles below.)
I was also able to visit Ms.Yorkey's fifth grade class. They were researching important black Americans and creating a flip grid to share with their classmates. I got there when they were just starting, but I can't wait to get back in there next week and see how far they have progressed and hear about what they have learned.
A final highlight was watching our 4th grade students "buddying-up" in "Friendship Club" with Mr. Haller's students in our Special Day Class. Watching the ability awareness lessons that were delivered earlier this month pay off and seeing our students in our general education classrooms play and learn along side our students who are differently abled was truly rewarding. We have great students here at Buena Vista who are thoughtful, kind and caring.
