8th Grade Language Arts
6th Grade Language Arts
The knights and princesses of 6th grade are enveloped in the Middle Ages. The language arts classes are reading the novel Crispin: The Cross of Lead which takes place toward the end of the Middle Ages when the plague is ravishing England. The novel is always a big hit with students as they read with anticipation to uncover the exploits of Crispin and his dangerous pursuers. Likewise, the social studies classes are studying the daily life of those in the Middle Ages and all of the intriguing things that go along with the time period such as castles, stained glass windows, and medieval weapons! There’s no doubt that the 6th graders will be bringing back chainmail as a fashion statement by the end of the year!
In case you didn’t have the opportunity to attend our preschool parent meeting on April 25, here is our presentation for you to view. The video that was shared before and at the end of our meeting is on the last slide (both preschool and kindergarten). I know you will want to see this, as it gives you a snapshot of the fun and learning that happens by design at West Elementary! Preschool Parent Orientation
I would be remiss if I did not credit Tyler Pearson for capturing photos for this and our kindergarten presentation to share with you. Please let me know how I can make your experiences here at West more welcoming and inviting!
On April 26 we had a great turn out for the kindergarten parent meeting! It’s an exciting time and there were lots of questions! If you are the parent of a five year old or one who will be five by September 15, please take a few minutes to enjoy this video. At any point over the coming weeks, please call our office with any questions you may have.
Kindergarten Parent Orientation
May is full of activities! We will be completing our spring FAST reading assessments and this year we are beginning implementation of FAST math. Along with that, Kindergarten visits the Blank Park Zoo and Marion County Park for field trips; first grade visits the Science Center of Iowa, second grade visits the Marion County Historical Village. Our Little Panthers Preschool students will have their graduations on May 24 and 25 at KPAC and their last day of school is May 25. The PTO Jog-a-thon is May 9, West Track Day is set for May 18, and on May 22 we will have Step Up Day where students will get to find out who their teachers are for next year.
Stay up to date through the communication provided by your child’s classroom teacher. Speaking of teachers, a huge thank you goes out to all our staff for their dedication to the students of Knoxville Community School. The week of May 7-11 is Staff Appreciation Week. I know they would enjoy a note of appreciation. Many of you do that throughout the year, and it’s always very heartwarming to see!

Reading is Farmtastic
Students at West Elementary we have been participating in a school-wide incentive to motivate students to practice their reading skills. The theme of our 3 week long incentive is "Reading is Farmtastic". A commercial was created to kick off the reading program. Teachers took a trip to the farm to share why reading is "Farmtastic"! The intervention started the second week in April and ran through the end of the month. Students are now taking a statewide assessment called FAST to determine growth in reading over the school year. Our goal is for students to improve their word per minute scores by a few words a minute over the three week period.
Daily, students work through a reading routine with a partner to practice reading skills appropriate to their grade level. Last year, we saw great growth over the three week period so we hope to see the same growth this year as well. At the end of the intervention time each day, teachers award the hardest working pair with a certificate. Pictures of these "Farmtastic Readers" in a farm scene are shared on a TV in our lobby area. Students love to stop and watch themselves on the big screen.
We plan to celebrate our growth with a "Farm Fest" day in which students will visit a petting zoo and learn about farm with the KHS FFA, The ISU extension office will be facilitating "Little Hands on the Farm" activities, and John Deere has agreed to bring out some equipment for students to explore. Linda Abbott, our principal, has offered to kiss a pig if students show gains in reading! Other Farm Fest activities will continue throughout the school day.
