2020-2021
Back to School Edition
Message from the Principal
Welcome back LSHS Families!
I hope you had a great summer. Although this summer was strangely different, I hope you found ways to make connections and memories with family and friends. As the famed coach John Wooden once said, “things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out.”
The 2020-2021 school year will start in a hybrid learning environment. Unlike last spring when the COVID Pandemic took us by surprise, this time we are prepared and ready to go. Our teachers have worked countless hours to prepare a learning model that will allow students to thrive. Most would agree that the hybrid model is not ideal, but we remain committed to making the best out of the situation we have been placed in. The silver lining of the hybrid model is it gives us more time to leverage technology to enhance learning.
Together we will make 2020-2021 a great school year. Our Cougar family will come together and rise to the occasion. I firmly believe we have the best educators in the world and the connections and learning that will take place this year will be second to none.
Respectfully,
Principal Murphy

Building Hours
LSHS and LNHS Building hours during hybrid learning:
Due to the need for social distancing within the Hybrid Learning model before and after school, Lakeville North and Lakeville South have adjusted building hours for students to 7:30am - 3:00pm.
In order to maintain traffic flow safely, students will not be allowed to enter the school building until 7:30am (doors will be locked from entry unless they are enrolled in an Early Bird.) Once students enter the building, they will report directly to their first hour class unless they are getting a school breakfast.
Upon the final bell, students will be asked to depart the building promptly by 3pm unless they are participating in scheduled school sanctioned activities.
Thank you for your support as we work together to provide a safe and quality educational environment for our students!

Schedule Change Requests
Due to COVID and cohort sizes needing to be kept at a minimum, many schedule changes cannot be made. Please refer to the acceptable reasons for requesting a schedule change.
The only ACCEPTABLE educational reasons for a schedule change are:
● Seniors who need a course to fulfill a graduation requirement
● An inappropriate level or sequence placement
(i.e. Spanish 3 not 2, AP/Honors to a General Course)
● An obvious error in schedule (i.e. same class twice)
● Prerequisites that have not been fulfilled
● Would like to opt-in to a higher level/ more rigorous version of their current course
(i.e. General Course to AP/Honors)
Schedule changes WILL NOT be made for these reasons:
● Specific teacher request
● Switch sections of the same course to get a different teacher
● Requested change would exceed class size capacity
● Student changed his/her mind
● Desire to have a certain lunch schedule
● Desire to be with friends
● Desire to have a class at a certain time of the day
As a reminder, students must keep a minimum of 6 classes as a freshman, sophomore, and junior and a minimum of 5 classes as seniors.
Thank you,
LSHS Administration

Covid 19 Guidelines
Masks
Face Coverings For All (MDH pages 6-9)
All students, staff, and visitors are required to wear face coverings in school buildings, district facilities, and school vehicles. For specific guidelines and exceptions to the face covering requirements, please refer to the district COVID Face Covering Policy.
The district will make cloth masks available to all employees and students if they do not have their own. Personal masks should be washed daily. Disposable masks will be available if staff or students forget to bring a face covering to school. Students should be encouraged to bring at least two additional masks to school.
Wearing face coverings at school will be a new experience for students and some, particularly those in early elementary grades and students with special needs, may have difficulty adjusting to this requirement. As always, our priority is to approach such situations with empathy and to use positive approaches to encourage compliance. School leaders should work with students who cannot tolerate face coverings due to legitimate health reasons (e.g. health conditions, disability, etc.) and create a school climate that will combat any harassment or bullying of these students. Per the MDH guidance, face shields can be worn in place of a face covering as an accommodation for both employees and students. The district will have face shields available. If students are unable to tolerate a face covering or shield, there may need to be a discussion about moving to a full distance learning model.
**New: Please note that on Aug. 19, 2020, MSBA recommended that when wearing a gaiter as a face covering, it should be doubled up at a minimum.
Please also see MDH Guidance on Face Coverings

Student Attendance
Lakeville South High School believes regular school attendance directly relates to academic success, benefits students socially, provides opportunities for important communication between teachers and students and establishes student dependability.
Attendance will be taken daily. Teachers will take attendance on in-person days. Students will be responsible to check in for attendance on their distance learning days for EACH OF THEIR CLASSES. This will be done via Infinite Campus.
A student logs into the portal, clicks "Attendance" under "Check-Ins" and clicks the "Yes, I'm here" button. Attendance is directly recorded in Campus. The first minute of the video linked below shows this. Teachers can also see real-time which students have or have not checked in.
This video link will show you how to take attendance: https://jwp.io/s/CiGfm9Ba
PSAT Registration
PSAT Test Date: October 14th 8:00am
Registration for the PSAT will open on September 14, 2020.
The cost is $30.
Students will register via Infinite Campus Portal starting September 14 through October 9. This is an optional test for juniors wanting to qualify for National Merit status and sophomores/juniors seeking practice for college entrance exams. Only juniors and sophomores may take the exam. Please note: October 14th is a non-school day for students. Students will need transportation to and from the exam.
Questions? Contact Julie.Peterson@isd194.org or 952-232-3306.
The PSAT measures: critical reading skills, math problem-solving skills, & writing skills. Students have developed these skills over many years, both in and out of school. This test does not require students to recall specific facts from classes.
Who should take this test?
- ·Receive feedback on strengths and weaknesses on skills necessary for college study. Students can then focus their preparation on those areas that could most benefit from additional study or practice.
- See how the performance on an admissions test might compare with that of others applying to college.
- Enter the competition for scholarships from National Merit (grade 11 only).
- Help prepare for the SAT. Students become familiar with the questions and the exact directions you will see on the SAT.
- · Receive information from colleges when you check "yes" to Student Search Service.
Visit the Official College Board Student Guide for practice: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10
Parking Permits
Parking permits can be purchased through Infinite Campus. Parking passes will not be required until October 1 for students. Passes as of October 1 for semester 1 hybrid schedule will be $50.

Please follow these step-by-step instructions on how to pay fees in Infinite Campus.
Student Handbook Planners
The planner contains the school calendar, activities calendar and student handbook. Planners also provide students a place to record daily assignments. We believe organized students are more successful. The Cougar planner serves as a school pass and assignment organizer. Planners also serve as a communication link for parents when they review daily assignments at home. Student planners and the Parent Portal are excellent sources to check for incomplete assignments. The student handbook can also be found on our school website.
The Student Handbook Planner also outlines Lakeville South High School student expectations, school polices, information regarding clubs and activities, student behavioral consequences and a phone directory. Parents can purchase an additional Cougar planner for $5.00 in Student Services. Lost planners can be replaced for a $5.00 fee. Printed copies are available from Student Services at 952.232.3330.
Parent Portal
The Parent Portal provides Cougar parents current assignment feedback, grade book information, and daily attendance. This is an excellent communication link between the classroom teacher and parent. If you have not signed up for Parent Portal or forgot your login and password, email SISsupport@isd194.org.
National Honor Society Information
An email has been sent to eligible juniors and seniors for NHS application. If you have any questions, please contact Deb Arnold at arno1697@isd194.org Students need a 3.7+ GPA to qualify. Ms. Arnold will have two WebEx informational meetings during the first week of school and the deadline for application is 3pm on Friday, September 25th.

Protection and Privacy of Pupil Records
Lakeville Public Schools are responsible to collect, maintain and disseminate pupil records and protect student privacy under Federal and State statutes. If a parent would like to request we not release directory information on your child, the parent needs to complete Form A (K-11 students) located in District Policy 515. Form B (11th-12th students) can be filled out by parents who request that directory information not be released to military recruiters. District Policy 515 is available on the Lakeville District website. Please see link below.
Forms must be submitted each year to the Administrative Services Office by September 15th. Directory information for grades K-11 includes: student name, grade in school, dates of enrollment, participation in officially recognized activities, weight and height of members of athletic teams, degrees and awards received. Directory information relating to students in grade 12 includes: name, address, date of birth, sex, grade in school, major field of study, participation in officially recognized activities, weight and height of members of athletic teams, degrees and awards received.
