Nurse News
The leaves are turning and before we know it snow will blanket our playground.
Recess is not canceled unless the temperatures are MINUS 10 below. That means all students must have proper winter gear to be safe outside. We have three secondhand stores: Goodwill, Value Village and Turn a Leaf that have a great selection of used winter gear.
If you find you are still having difficulties acquiring items to keep your student warm for recess, please contact me. If you have snow gear your student has outgrown CWE would gladly accept your donation.

Counselor Corner
Hello families! My name is Kim Troisi and I am excited to be the new (and first!) school counselor at Cottonwood Creek. I have 21 years of school counseling experience at the middle and high school levels here in the Valley and I am now really enjoying this change to elementary school. I work part-time and you can find me at school Wednesday-Friday.
I am an educator, not a therapist. My services are available to ALL students. It is my job to make sure that students are happy and doing their best at school. This is a tall order since so many factors go into kids doing well: their ability to focus and pay attention, their relationships with peers and teachers, how well they can manage their feelings and impulses, and their lives outside of school. I will work to address these issues using proactive classroom guidance lessons , as well as individual or small group counseling. I ask my students to think of me as a "coach" of sorts. I don't solve their problems, but I can help them work through a tough issue or find their own solution, so they can have a good day or be as successful as possible in the school setting.
I have been into each class to visit now and have been teaching classroom lessons this month on feelings, friendship, and anti-bullying to start the school year. Including parents is a priority for me. If I start to see a child regularly or a concern comes up, I will contact you. I've been getting to know students and look forward to meeting and working with parents and families as well. Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have questions or concerns - my door is open!
PTO News
Volunteer request:
Our Halloween Carnival is quickly approaching and we would love to have your help! Details will be discussed at our next PTO Meeting after school on Tuesday October 3. We will need help setting up the haunted house before the carnival and also need help running games during the carnival.
Donations request:
We are in need of any gently used Halloween and/or Christmas decor. Our decorations have been well used and loved and many are in need of replacing. If you have anything at home that you no longer need, we can put them to good use at the school. Thank you!
Camp Read-A-Lot
We had a fun afternoon! Thanks to all the families that joined us for some fun activities connected to the science of reading!
- Phonemic Awareness Cave: Phonemic awareness can be done in the dark! Hearing sounds and even hearing words that rhyme is part of it.
- Bird Watching Phonics: They made binoculars out of tubes and duct tape. Then they matched birds with the letter of their "call". Did you find the flamingo hanging out in the woods?
- Fluency River: Working on smooth reading and fluctuating voice, kids read the word or phrases as they went down the river from our own personal waterfall.
- Hiking Vocabulary: They hiked the halls to find signs with 3 different vocabulary words.
- Tier 1=everyday words
- Tier 2=frequently used academic
- Tier 3=content specific, scientific
- Campfire Comprehension: They made connections between pictures to create a story!
