In-Person Learning for All Grade Levels Resumes September 8
We are happy to announce that we will begin school with all four grade levels of students on campus on Tuesday, September 8. Please remember that we are resuming a normal school day and bell schedule on Tuesday, September 8.
- The building will open at 6:30 AM
- Students can be dropped off in the front circle drive. You can view the morning traffic flow at this link: Morning Traffic Flow.
- We will release students to 1st period at 7:05 AM and 1st period will begin at 7:15 AM.
- The day will end at 2:25 PM. Scheduled tutoring time and seasonal extra curricular activities and practices will occur after school.
Bell Schedules
Breakfast, Freshmen Lunch and Advisory, and West Hour
- Breakfast will be available for purchase starting at 6:30 AM. To help with social distancing, we have staggered and designated seating for students who are eating and sitting in our commons.
- Freshmen Lunch: To make the group size of our 9th grade lunches smaller, our 9th graders will have 2 lunches. On Tuesday, 5th period 9th grade teachers will tell students which lunch to attend. To help with social distancing, we have staggered and designated seating for students who are eating and sitting in our commons.
- Freshmen Advisory: 9th grade students will also have an advisory period, which is a time for students to receive tutoring from teachers.
- West Hour: Our 10th-12th grade students will have West Hour, which is a time students can eat lunch, receive tutoring from teachers, and participate in various clubs or organizations.
Student Parking Information
Parking Permits: Students that have signed up to purchase a parking permit can purchase the permit next week during West Hour in the commons and after school. Please remember that if your child has requested a parking space through the online parking sign up sheet, all required documents to purchase a spot must be submitted to our front office receptionist by 4 PM on Friday, September 4. If the required documents are not submitted by Friday, the parking space your child requested may no longer be available. You can access information about parking permits at this link: Parking Permit Information.
Student Parking: For next week, students who drive to school will park anywhere in the parking spaces highlighted as "Student Parking" in the image to the right. Students are not allowed to park in the back of the school or in the teachers’ parking lot. Beginning Monday, September 14, students must have a parking permit to park on campus.
Student Schedules
Student Schedules: Students will not need a new schedule on Tuesday. Students can use and follow the class schedule they have followed since August 12. Your child can access his/her schedule through their Self-Serve account at Student Self-Serve. If your child cannot find or access his or her schedule on September 8, we will have staff in our library at 6:45 AM to help.
Chromebooks for In-Person Learning
If your child checked out a chromebook, please have him/her bring the chromebook to school on Tuesday. At this time, students will bring their chromebook to school and back home with them each day. If your child has a personal device (tablet or laptop), then please have him/her bring the device to school each day. Cell phones aren't preferable as they do not work as well with Canvas.
Transportation
Virtual Tour of the Building for 9th Grade
Masks/Face Coverings
- Face masks or coverings are defined as:
- Masks include non-medical grade disposable face masks, cloth face coverings (over the nose and mouth), or full-face shields to protect eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Per Governor Abbott's Executive Order, your child is required to wear a face covering on campus
- Per Governor Abbott’s Executive Order issued July 2, 2020, all persons over the age of 10 are required to wear a face covering. Students in intermediate, junior high, and high school will be required to wear a face covering.
- If a secondary student arrives at their campus without a mask, they will be given a disposable, medical-grade mask.
- Students will be required to provide his/her own face covering. The campus will have disposable masks available if needed.
- Face coverings must cover the mouth and the nose and allow for the teachers to still be able to identify the student.
- Students are not required to wear a mask/face covering while eating or while engage in exercise
Visitors
- Only visitors essential to school operations and academic purposes will be permitted to enter Magnolia ISD facilities.
- All visitors who enter the building will be required to wear a face covering.
- All visitors will be required to complete a COVID-19 screening form prior to entering the building.
- Parents needing to drop off items for their child will have a designated place at the entrance to the campus.
- Schools will utilize virtual meeting options when possible to reduce the number of campus visitors.
- Campus meetings such as individual parent meetings, ARDS, 504, RtI, LPAC, PTO, etc. will be held virtually to comply with Texas Education Agency Guidance for visitors. When a virtual meeting is not possible, special arrangements may be made with the campus principal that will adhere to visitor protocols, screenings, and face-covering requirements.
- Parent organization meetings will be held virtually to minimize outside contact and large group gatherings.
Message to Virtual Learners
Virtual Learning: On Tuesday, your child will continue learning with the same teacher he/she has had since August 12. We are pleased to be able to keep this consistency. Your child will continue to learn via a mix of asynchronous and synchronous instruction, all of which will happen through Canvas. However, the time in which your child's synchronous instruction will occur will be different from what it has been the last few weeks. Your child's teacher will notify him/her of the new synchronous schedule tomorrow.
Please help by ensuring that your child is present during the synchronous instruction sessions.
Attendance: Virtual students will be counted present when they attend their teacher's synchronous instruction sessions and/or when they engage with the content posted on their teacher's Canvas pages. So, on days when there is no synchronous instruction session, students will be counted present in the course if they engage with the content on their teacher's Canvas page. On days when there is synchronous instruction, students will be counted present in the course if they attend the synchronous session.
If students do not either attend a synchronous session or engage with content on their teacher's Canvas page, then they will be counted absent from the course.
Attendance will be taken daily in each virtual course, so, again, students must either attend a synchronous session or engage with content on each of their teacher's Canvas page each day.
Moving to In-Person Learning: As a reminder, if your child would like to return to campus for full in-person learning, he/she may do so but only at the end of this 9 weeks.
Including Grades in Class Rank: For those students opting to count all eligible courses in the calculation of class rank, please remember that all major assessments must be taken on campus in a proctored environment, primarily after school hours. This will begin next week, so if your child is taking an assessment in any class next week, he/she will follow the guidelines below:
- Your child's teacher will notify him/her of upcoming major assessments.
- Your child will receive the same notice as all other students and will take assessments on the same day as all students learning each day on campus.
- Our campus follows an assessment schedule to keep students from having too many assessments on one day, but there will be days when your child will take more than one test on campus.
- On testing days, your child will come to campus no later than 2:40 PM and go to the library.
- Assessments will be distributed at 3 PM.
- Unless otherwise specified by your child's teacher, your child will have 46 minutes to take the assessment, which is the same amount of time students learning in-person each day will have.
- If your child has another assessment to take that day, then the next assessment will be given at 4 PM. Again, your child will have 46 minutes to take the assessment.
As a reminder, all major assessments in each of your child's courses must be taken on campus in order for your child's grades to be included in the calculation of class rank. While we understand that there are times when a student may not be present for an assessment, and while we will be sensitive to legitimate excuses for missing an assessment, failure to take assessments on campus on the appropriate days may lead to your child no longer being able to have their grades included in the calculation of class rank.
While we will miss seeing your child on campus each day, we are happy to be able to have them as a student at Magnolia West HS and look forward to serving them this year.
