A MESSAGE FROM MRS. FORD
Being Thankful!
What are you thankful for today? No matter how crazy our life or world seem to become, we are in control of how we react. Do we project doom and gloom or do we choose to view our glass as half full? Our reactions to different stimuli in our lives project to all those around us. The negative breeds pessimism while a positive outlook provides hope. The more we are around positive people the more optimistic our life seems to become, and the more we are around, or listen to negativity the more troubled, angry, and depressed we become. Yet day after day we worry about things that we cannot control. There is plenty of research being dedicated to this very topic. Happier people are healthier, work places filled with happy people are more productive, happy students learn more...and the list goes on and on. Obviously, our lives don't always work out the way we plan, but if we take the time to look around, there is plenty to be thankful for. Surround yourself with people who lift you up, or be the one to lift another's spirit. Help spread good in this world. A simple smile can change a person's day. Let your positive attitude be contagious to all those around you and see what a difference this will make! There will always be something to fear or complain about, but there will also be plenty to rejoice and smile about. Choose to make a positive difference and focus on the good. Walk away from the drama and negativity and choose to be happy. Many families share what they are thankful for at their Thanksgiving dinners. I challenge you to share what you are thankful for on a daily basis not only with yourself, but with your family. Today would be a great day to start! What are you thankful for today?
Shout Out!
Herman E. Dummer School works closely with Valley West Community Hospital to provide overall health and wellness education to our students and staff. Some of the current programs that are being implemented are the Nutrition and Hygiene presentations geared toward our fourth and fifth-grade students. Students are taught healthy alternatives in eating, how to read labels to help make these positive choices, and how proper exercise keeps you healthy and strong. Along with taking care of ourselves by what we eat, we are also taught how to take care of our bodies as we grow and mature. Proper hygiene techniques and recommendations are discussed in all of our classrooms as well. Our 5th grade is also participating in a ten-week program through a health systems prevention grant received by Valley West Hospital helping our students to make correct choices, dealing with peer pressure, and drug and alcohol prevention, all of which is part of our Illinois standards.
Winter is Coming!
With October coming to an end and November beginning, we are seeing the temperatures drop. We will be outside as long as the wind chill and/or temperature are 10 degrees or above. Please have children dress appropriately. On this note, there have been many sweatshirts, jackets, and misc. items left in the hall or on our playground that we have collected and put on a table outside the office. Please have your child check this table if they have lost an item or you may also stop by if you happen to be in the building. We will be donating these items shortly after conferences if they are not claimed.
Parent/Teacher Conferences
Your child should have recently brought home their first report card of the year. I hope you are all taking advantage of our online system we call "Tyler". It is a great way to see your child's grades, pay school fees, and track lunch information. If you have questions about Tyler, please do not hesitate to call the office. I also encourage you to call your child's teacher if you have questions regarding grades. We will be happy to talk to you.
November 2nd and 3rd are Parent/Teacher conferences. This is a great time to talk one-on-one with your child's teacher and ask those questions, voice those concerns, or to just say "thank you" as our teachers work diligently to help meet the needs of all students. We truly care about your children and want the best for all of them. In order to make this happen, it requires a team effort and we will do everything possible to help you in this endeavor. Communication is a must! If you have not signed up for conferences yet, please let your child's teacher know and we will get you scheduled.
Tardies
Just a reminder that our bell rings at 7:55 am and students should be in their classrooms by 8:00 am ready to learn. It is very important that your child arrives on time to school so they may get the best education possible and also to not disturb the education of others when coming in late to class. We appreciate your help in this matter.
Service Projects
Starting in November, we will be collecting canned and boxed goods to be distributed by the Franklin Mall Project to those in need. You may send these items to school with your child up until Thanksgiving. We will also be having a clothing drive sometime later in the school year. Start saving your clean, gently used clothing. More details will be sent home at a later date; however, we wanted you to be aware to save those old, too small, or "just not for me" clothing to be given to someone who would be truly grateful. We are striving to teach our children the joy of service, and what a great way to serve and help the community in which we live! As stated earlier, more information will be coming home later this year.
As always, please keep the communication open with your child to see the fun and exciting things that are happening here at school as well as the learning that is taking place. We take pride in our school and in what we do, and are here to help your children right along with you.
Happy Thanksgiving!
"Learning Today, Shaping Tomorrow!"
Sincerely,
Lynette Ford

FABULOUS 4TH GRADE
In Math we are working on multiplication and will be starting division soon! Please encourage your student to practice their math facts! Their fact fluency is very important as we continue on in the year and will make the new skills come much easier to them!
In Reading many classes are finishing up their first novel study. We have been working with the students on making inferences and supporting their inference with text evidence. We will be continuing making inferences throughout the year but now we are moving onto studying theme and finding the main idea in texts.
Science has continued to be exciting in 4th grade! The classes have continued to study magnets and electricity and have been creating their own circuits to light bulbs or turn on a motor. More information about the electricity projects will be released from your child's teacher coming soon.

FANTASTIC 5TH GRADE
Our students have been learning all about the explorers of North America and the 13 British Colonies in Social Studies.
Also, our students have been learning a great deal of using text evidence, theme, and narrative elements in Reading. We are excited to be able to focus on one topic during reading so that our students will master these skills and strategies before moving on to a new one. During the month of November, we will be working on comparing and contrasting two or more genres and stories.
In Math, we have been studying multiplication of whole numbers and decimals. We will be studying division of whole numbers and decimals during the month of November and leading into beginning fractions towards the end of the month.
In Science, our students have been learning different units. Some students have been learning about the Earth and Sun while others are working on Living Systems. It is always an exciting time during Science with all of our experiments and investigations we are able to complete!
Just a reminder, if you haven't signed up for a Parent/Teacher conference, please contact your child's teacher to do this. Conferences are Thursday, November 2nd and Friday November 3rd.
The fifth grade teachers would like to remind you about our school's on-line services. Stay up to date with grades, homework, and school activities by logging in to www.sandwich430.org. Also, be sure to check the Pearson Math website, www.pearsonrealize.com, to view the on-line version of our Math text book and other assistance for students when they are working on homework.
