Westview Staff Spotlight
Fabian Mak
Name: Fabian Mak
1. What classes do you teach and/or programs and activities do you work with?
- I teach STEM Physics and AP Physics C.
- I run Westview's Science Bowl teams.
- I supervise for Science Ambassadors, a great program that pairs 40+ Westview students as mentors to 40+ 4th and 5th graders from Rock Creek to do science experiments once every other week or so.
- I advise for Computer Science club.
- I advise for Machine Learning and App Development club.
- I advise for Esports club (currently focusing on Rocket League and Valorant)
- I advise for Super Smash Brothers club, where students come in to play together once every other week.
2. How long have you been at WHS? This is my 8th year at Westview
3. What do you enjoy most about the Westview community? I enjoy the diversity of thought and backgrounds, and the desire from everyone to support each other. I really appreciate the strong drive for inclusivity in our culture, our teaching, and pretty much everything we do. I also appreciate the common ideal that we try to teach to the character of students, not to standardized tests.
4. If you could have a gigantic billboard anywhere with anything on it - metaphorically speaking, getting a message out to millions or billions - what would it say and why? It could be a few words or a paragraph. It could be someone else's quote or any quotes you think of often or live your life by. Why would you put it on a billboard today?
When asked why actors would want to learn martial arts in an interview, Bruce Lee responded:
"It might sound too philosophical, but it's unacting acting or acting unacting...What I'm saying is it is a combination of both. I mean, here it is, the natural instinct, and here is control. You are to combine the two in harmony. If you have one to the extreme you will be very unscientific; if you have another to the extreme, you become all of a sudden a mechanical man, no longer a human being. So, it is a successful combination of both, so therefore it's not pure naturalness or unnaturalness. The ideal is unnatural naturalness, or natural unnaturalness."
He later says, "To express oneself honestly, not lying to oneself, and to express myself honestly. Now that, my friend, is very hard to do."
This interview really resonates with me because I think it gets to the heart of learning. Learning is the process of refining instinct. The goal isn't to parrot new knowledge, but to assimilate it into our being.
5. What is something about you that many people at Westview might not know? (Hobbies, talents, interests, fun facts, etc...)
My brother and I were born in Panama, which is why we both have Spanish names - Fabian y Gustavo. We fled in 1988 when I was 3 because the US incited a coup in the country, and my parents didn't feel safe there. The only thing I remember about Panama was that we owned chickens and the cockroaches were huge.
Masks Optional
Thank you!
District Masking Decision
Sent by BSD March 11
Dear BSD Community and Staff,
As a reminder, our new mask policy goes into effect on Monday, March 14. BSD will no longer require masks at school, in district facilities or on school buses; however, students, staff and visitors can choose to wear masks, if they prefer. Again, masking is optional.
Students and staff may have compelling reasons to continue mask wearing. We invite you to watch this video with your students: Either Way, It’s OK. To be clear, we will not tolerate bullying of any kind and will follow disciplinary action as outlined in Board Policy JFCF.
For additional updates, please visit our COVID-19 Protocol webpage.
Thank you.
Sent by BSD March 7
Dear BSD Community,
Thank you for participating in our recent surveys regarding adopting a mask-optional district policy. Students, parents/guardians and staff were asked this question:
Would you like the District to move to a mask-optional policy for all students and staff, meaning individuals would choose for themselves whether to continue to wear masks in schools and district facilities?
- Yes
- No
Based on survey feedback and a dramatic drop in COVID-19 cases, in addition to updated guidance from the Oregon Department of Education (ODE), Oregon Health Authority (OHA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and collaboration with our employee associations, the District will be changing its mask policy.
Effective March 14, BSD will no longer require masks at school, in district facilities or on school buses; however, students, staff and visitors can choose to wear masks, if they prefer. Again, masking is optional. The District does reserve the right to reinstate masking if guided to do so by ODE, OHA or Washington County Public Health due to worsening COVID-19 conditions.
We’re also announcing other changes in our COVID-19 protocols due to new guidance from ODE:
- Contact tracing and quarantining are no longer required. Parents/guardians are still asked to inform schools if their students test positive for COVID-19; schools will then inform the entire school community via ParentSquare. (Note: it is possible under county Communicable Disease Guidance for Schools that classrooms could be quarantined in case of a disease outbreak.)
- Diagnostic testing at school sites and the district administrative office along with the OHSU (students) and OHA (staff) weekly screening programs are still available.
- Social distancing of 3 feet is encouraged but not required.
- Vaccinations are still required for all staff and volunteers. Those seeking medical or religious exceptions must complete the necessary OHA forms.
It’s been a long time getting to this moment. We want to thank every student, family and staff member for adhering to our COVID-19 protocols for the past two years. We should all continue to be vigilant, but hopefully, brighter days are ahead.
Thank you.
Fentanyl Safety Concerns We All Need to Know!
Here is a tragic story from PPS we all need to be aware of:
Two Portland teens died of suspected accidental fentanyl overdoses within 24 hours, police say
Young people are purchasing what they think are OxyContin, Percocet or Xanax pills via social media, but what they are getting are fake pills containing the cheaper, stronger, and more deadly synthetic drug called fentanyl. Fentanyl is up to 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine. Fentanyl is odorless, tasteless and colorless. Teens never know what they’re getting, and one pill can kill them. Students and families can report confidential concerns about substances circulating in the community by going to safeoregon.com.
Our District ran an awareness campaign around fentanyl last year. If you are interested in learning more, here is a video: https://bit.ly/3hRPcT9 that shares the story of a Beaverton School District student who died from fentanyl poisoning in December 2020 and includes an interview with his parents. This video was recommended for viewing by the Washington County Sheriff's Office.
These are important conversations to have with our students to keep them safe and potentially save lives.

BSD Proposed 2022 Bond
In May 2022, voters will decide on a new proposed capital improvement bond. If passed, the bond would raise about $723 million to be used on projects across the district including seismic stability upgrades, improvement of air ventilation systems, replacement of aging roofs and additional classroom space to alleviate overcrowding. Bond money also would be used to improve accessibility in special education classrooms, enhance learning spaces and replace all one-to-one student Chromebooks and iPads. The two largest proposed projects are the complete rebuilds of Beaverton High School and Raleigh Hills K-8 School.
The bond proposal will appear on the May 17, 2022 ballot.

Beaverton School District Antiracist Vision Statement
The BSD School Board unanimously voted to adopt an Antiracist Vision Statement. Informed by the work of the Beaverton Multicultural Educator Community (BMEC) and the 40-member Equitable Policies Task Force made up of students, family, community members and staff, the vision statement will guide our implementation of our Every Student Belongs Policy (ACB) and help ensure that our schools are safe and welcoming learning spaces for all.
Antiracist Vision Statement
Every student and employee has the right to learn and work in a safe and inclusive school environment that honors their race, color, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability and national origin.
Beaverton School District owns that our student outcomes currently point to our part in perpetuating institutional racism, and we commit to actions that address the current culture that is leading to these outcomes. Schools are critical in providing safe and creative opportunities for people to learn about different cultural and racial identities, have conversations about pressing issues and correct injustice wherever it exists. We commit to eliminating the structures, policies and practices that perpetuate inequities in our schools and in our community.
Beaverton School District will authentically engage each student, family and staff member to build connection, uplift understanding and truly value the diversity of our school communities. We will work to dismantle policies and systems that perpetuate institutional racism and barriers to education and other school-related activities. Students and families of color will see themselves represented in curriculum, materials, instruction, classrooms and all school activities in our district. Our district will honor, respect, represent, engage with and be accessible to students and adults from all communities.
Eliminating racism and all forms of bias is fundamental to our work — not just a part of our work. We commit to removing racism, white supremacy, hate speech and all forms of bigotry from our schools and communities.
Our district will:
- Seek and incorporate student, family, educator and administrator input in decision-making processes.
- Provide ongoing anti-bias and antiracist education to every staff member.
- Enforce Every Student Belongs procedures to prevent, interrupt and stop racist and biased incidents among students and between staff and students or community members.
- Create an inclusive learning community that honors, respects, represents, engages and is accessible to learners from all communities.
- Create permanent district funding and resources to promote equitable policies, structures and practices for BIPOC students and other marginalized groups.
- Implement policies, procedures and professional development to confront and eliminate conscious and unconscious racism and review these policies and procedures regularly to ensure we are meeting our commitments.
