Science Research Program

Maine Township H.S. District 207 STEM Initiative

What is the Science Research Program?

As STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) initiatives have proliferated around the country due to their proven effectiveness, Maine 207 hopes to launch the Science Research Program in the summer of 2013.

This program will help students:

  • Develop skills in proper experimental procedures and techniques
  • Improve scientific writing, research, and presentation through practice
  • Understand real-world applications of research and experimentation
  • Get excited and invested in their work

What Students Will the SRP Reach?

Maine Township High School District 207 serves the students of three local high schools: Maine East, Maine South, and Maine West. The students come primarily from Des Plaines and Park Ridge, with small populations in some of the neighboring communities as well.

The program is meant to excite students to their academic curiosities in the STEM fields. Whether a student wants to begin research in a field they hope to pursue in higher education or they wish to study a disease that affected someone in their family, this program aims to invest students in their education and provide them support while delving in to a topic that sparks their interest.

How Will the SRP Operate?

Using our existing facilities, the course will begin in the summer for a three week period so that the students can launch their projects with unimpeded access to lab time, materials, and staff.

After this initial period, the course will continue throughout the school year, but take place outside of school hours, giving students access to all other core curriculum courses. In total, students will receive at least 300 contact hours with teachers and members of relevant professional communities. The course will conclude with a paper/presentation on the topic, and, if applicable, entrance into competitions or scientific journals.

How Can We Help?

In order to get this program off the ground, we are hoping to find donations of time, supplies, and funding. The projected budget for the program is $22,800, in which the district has approved approximately half of the funding, and we are responsible for raising the remainder. This total includes projections for curriculum development, supplies, facilities costs, and salaries.

Currently, our primary focus is gaining the necessary financial support. Once we are able to do this, we hope to reach out to the professional community to solicit donations for time for our students to collaborate with individuals or groups from relevant fields.

If you are willing and able to provide support to our program, or have any questions, please use the contact information at the bottom of this page to reach us.
