Geneva School of Boerne - Vol. III

Current News

I hope your family is having an amazing summer! The Geneva Library wrapped up the school year with students voting for their favorite Triple Crown book the last week of April, and in May, we finished reading some great books! We also discussed our summer reading program, and how important it is to continue reading throughout the summer.

Triple Crown Reading Program Winners!

If your student completed their Triple Crown Reading Program list, they were invited to the library the last week of April to vote for their favorite book. While enjoying cookies and ginger ale, the students filled out their Triple Crown ballot and cast their vote!

The National award winners were announced in May and are as follows:

K-3rd Winner: My Grandfather's Coat, by Jim Aylesworth

K-3rd Honor: Out of the Woods, by Rebecca Bond

4-5th Winner: Boy on the Porch, by Sharon Creech

4-5th Honor: Duke, by Kirby Larson

All winner and honor book authors were sent a plaque by the Triple Crown Reading Program organization in recognition for their contribution to exceptional children's literature.

In preparation for next school year's Triple Crown list, if your student is coming into 2nd through 5th grade, they may begin reading the Triple Crown books for 2017-2018 once they reach Silver level in the Geneva Summer Reading Program. Please see the Summer Reading Letter and lists for more information and email me if you have any questions.

Here are some pictures from our voting party in the library!

What I Am Reading!

Since I am not reading to your sweet students this summer, I thought I would let you know what I am reading this summer! I attended the Society for Classical Learning at the end of June in Dallas and was blessed to be able to hear some amazing lectures and pick up some great books! I would encourage you to pick these up and put them on your nightstand!

The Little Way of Ruthie Leming, A Southern Girl, a Small Town, and the Secret of a Good Life, by Rod Dreher

Good Faith, being a Christian when Society Things You're Irrelevant & Extreme, by David Kinnaman

The White Horse King, The Life of Alfred the Great, by Benjamin Merkle

The Benedict Option, A Strategy for Christians in a Post-Christian Nation, by Rod Dreher

A Treasury of Paddington, by Michael Bond (because you are never too old to read Paddington!)

Geneva Summer Academy Book Club

For the first time, a book club was offered through Geneva Summer Academy! We had 12 students (2nd-5th grade) sign up to experience the James & the Giant Peach story. Not only did we read the book throughout the week, we did several fun activities such as making our own peaches and bookmarks (art project), research and present insect reports (writing & presenting), make a map of James' journey (geography), write a reading log summary, and watch the movie while eating peaches & whipped cream! It was very fun and I am already thinking of our next book for next summer! A big thank you to our Rhetoric student volunteers Marshall Shults and Gracie Janse!
