UOI # 6 : Who We Are
Transdisciplinary Theme:
An inquiry into the nature of the self; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities, and cultures; rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human.
Central idea: Making balanced choices helps maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Key concepts: Function, Causation, Change

What Have We Learned So Far
English Language Arts
Reading:
- Students have been working in small groups and with partners reading and exploring informational books about the five food groups and healthy choices.
- Students have been working on individual goals and strategies while being assessed on reading levels.
- Students continue to build comprehension through listening as they look for details to support the main idea of a story or connect facts to identify a topic. They used both informational books and fact finding story books.
Writing:
- Working independently, with a partner and in small groups, students have written about Ramadan, Eid and Nutrition reinforcing their writing elements and practicing the writing process. Their writing has demonstrated understanding of rhyme, parts of speech using nouns, adjectives, and verbs to show expressions, description and action.
Math
- Students have completed Module 5 Assessments and have started Module 6 analyzing, comparing and composing shapes. As we wrap up the year, students will continue to model teen quantities with number bonds, place value for ones and tens, and teen numbers through writing and illustrating.
- Students continue to practice addition and subtraction sentences for numbers zero through ten.
- Closing the year with Geometry, students will examine and model shapes and figures. They have used geometry as a context for exploring numerals as well as comparing attributes and quantities.
- To wrap up the year, students will further develop their spatial reasoning skills and begin laying the groundwork for an understanding of area through composition of geometric figures.

Healthy Habits
Five food groups- A healthy plate
Science: Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyle
- Students enjoyed a visit from Howard County Hospital Nutrition department and learned about healthy drink choices and sugar content in drinks.
- Students have been actively engaged in activities exploring the Five Food groups and the Food Pyramid through music and movement and hands- on activities.
- Students have created healthy menu options by designing their own menu's making sure to incorporate the Five Food Groups.
- Students actively participated in small groups identifying foods that are in each food group identifying them as healthy or unhealthy. Students had to explain "why" the food was a healthy or unhealthy choice.
- Creating paper plate diagrams students were able to demonstrate understanding of portion sizes (fist size) for a healthy meal.
- Using online resources, students explored a variety of facts supporting a balance of healthy eating, habits, routines and routines.

During this UOI, students worked on many things during this term such as
Arabic
Students worked on their reading skills by reading 4-5 lettered words.
Handwriting skills
Students learned vocabulary words for

Quran
Students have completed the memorization of Surah Qariah
IS
· Students have worked on perfecting their Salah
· Students are reviewing their daily duas
· The rights of the Body in Islam
· Staying healthy is a key to being a balanced Muslim
Art:
Picasso's portrait - texture and patterns
Student used plastic textured sheets under their mixed media paper and noticed the texture created while they were coloring with colored pencils. Students observed that the stronger the pressure applied , the bolder the texture appeared.
Students explored the elements of space, color, shape and texture and the principles of proportion and balance.
Background and foreground - Space
Students were limited to use only five colors and also had to fill all space (not to leave any white).
This limitation and constraint triggers resourcefulness and the ability to visualize and imagine the art before completion.
Students explored the element of space and further practiced the watercolor techniques.
Autoportrait
The students used patterned paper to decorate the outer frame of the portrait.
The students used their creativity while using their fine motor skills.
