DECEMBER IS ALL ABOUT FINANCIAL LITERACY!

December 2, 2022

What is Financial Literacy?

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) defines financial literacy as: "the ability to make informed judgments and to take effective actions regarding the current and future use and management of money. It includes the ability to understand financial choices, plan for the future, spend wisely, and manage the challenges associated with life events such as a job loss, saving for retirement, illness, or paying for a child's education."

There are resources to help you and to help your children to learn to be financially healthy. Here are a few:

· Jump$tart Coalition

· CFED

· Money As You Grow

· American Consumer Credit Counseling

This month the Play, Learn, and Grow Together group curriculum will address financial literacy, which is simply reinforcing concepts of "share, save, spend". You and your child will learn what is financial literacy?

To get you started at home, read a book about sharing such as "I Am Sharing" by Mercer Mayer. This topic seems complex but it is the opposite. It is a good time of year to think about the 3 "Ss". Ask questions! Is it a need or want? In groups we will explore these concepts. Activities will feature gifts of kindness, graphs of wants vs needs, creation of homemade presents and cards, piggy banks, and playing store. All this learning costs nothing as we spend time together investing early instiling these concepts in our youngest learners. Hope you can join us!
