Family Engagement Newsletter December 2022
Dear Families,
The school year is flying by and now the holidays are upon us! The students and staff are excited to celebrate this special holiday. For so many of us, it's a wonderful time to teach our children the traditions of our heritage. It is also a time to be grateful to all those who support and help Carver Elementary to be a supportive and welcoming school for all. It is because of your partnership that we are able to do the work of raising children to be kind and caring individuals who value and take pride in living a life with purpose.
Our Carver Elementary family wishes you peace and joy and we hope that you are able to take some time to enjoy the season with family and friends.
Thank you for your continued support,
Ruby C. Maestas
Carver Elementary Principal
KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION INFORMATION COMING SOON!
ATTENDANCE AT CARVER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
A Friendly Reminder About Attendance
Please use your best judgment when keeping your child home from school. For example, if your child is running a fever or experiencing stomach issues, we would expect your child to stay home. Please do your best to schedule vacations around school days. We have a limited number of days to work with your child, and we want to make every day count! For additional information, please refer to page 21 of our 2022-2023 Student Handbook. Remember to email cesabsent@carver.org and your child's teacher when they are absent from school. Beginning on January 17, 2023 if the school is not notified of the absence, a phone call will be sent. Remember to notify the school of any absences. We appreciate your support.
KINDERGARTEN GLOW BOWLING
January 20th, 2023
4:00 to 8:00pm
Glow bowling event for our kindergarten students and their families. We will have blinking lights, disco balls, and black lights. You may reserve a lane for a 30 minute block. The 4:00 time slot is reserved for students who prefer a lighter, less stimulating, glow bowling experience. There will be a form sent home at the beginning of January.
ANNUAL ASPEN UPDATE
We are still in the process of ensuring that all our families have completed the Annual Aspen Update for each of your children. We need this information updated yearly so that the Health Office or we can reach you in the event of an emergency. This is also where we get the information to compile the Family Directory and receive permission to post photos of students. We are so proud of their work at school, and we want to share this with you.
Please note that the update cannot be done on a smartphone; you must use a desktop or laptop. Chromebooks are available in the office at CES if you need to use one. If you need assistance, please stop by the school any day, between the hours of 9 and 2. One of the office staff can guide you through the process. If you can log into Aspen at home but still need assistance, please call the office. Mrs. Yenulevich or Mrs. Lopez can walk you through the process.

HEALTH OFFICE INFORMATION
Health around the Holidays
We take extra time to think of our friends and family as we approach the holidays. We wish everyone to remain happy, healthy, and safe. While attendance is essential, we ask you to help us limit the spread of illness-causing germs by monitoring your child at home to ensure they are well enough to attend school. If your student has been diagnosed with an illness, please inform the school nurse. Your information will be held confidential, and it may assist us in monitoring illness outbreaks and supporting students in families where there is someone who is immunocompromised. Please follow CES return-to-school guidelines or healthcare provider recommendations.
As a reminder, the following practices can help make a difference in keeping our school community well this season.
* Practice consistent hand hygiene
* Frequent sanitizing of commonly used surfaces
* Be sure to get adequate sleep each night
* Stay home when sick
* Avoid sharing foods/drinks with others
* Avoiding close contact (hugs/kisses), especially during times of illness
* Cover coughs and sneezes
* Keep current with annual wellness exams, immunizations, and dental cleanings
* Eat a well-balanced diet including colorful fresh fruits, vegetables, and protein
* Avoid or limit processed fast foods, junk food, and candy

Wintery Weather
Please help your student be prepared for outdoor recess. We encourage fresh air and exercise and will have outdoor recess as long as the actual temperature or “feels like” temperature is above 21 degrees. Send your child with extra clothes that they can keep in their locker just in case they get wet on the playground. Students are more comfortable in their own clothing from home and the health office is limited in its ability to accommodate students requesting a clothing change.
School Breakfast and Lunch is FREE for all students this year!
Be the "I" in Kind
SPOTLIGHTING OUR KIND STUDENTS AT CES!
The theme at CES this school year is "Above All Be Kind." Students are being challenged to be the "I" in Kind. Teachers will nominate students who have gone above and beyond to demonstrate kindness to others. From recent nominations, the following 5 students have been selected to showcase in this newsletter.
