The Beat Goes On...
23/24 Instrumental Music Update (grade 6) - Oct #1
GRADES
- The 10-point weekly "Class Lesson" grades are earned by using correct posture/hand position and participation during class, as well as preparation of the assigned material.
- If a student does not bring their instrument to class, the first time only is excused and marked excluded in progress book. Students also complete the "Oops, I forgot my instrument" planning sheet to help them create a plan for improvement (available on the band website if interested). Subsequent occurrences result in a zero for that class and a worksheet to earn back points.
- Usually we have one "written assessment" each quarter in a google form that students access in their google classroom. Since we will have had only 4 complete rotations of classes, this will be part of students' Q2 grade.
IN CLASS & AT HOME

YEAR 2:
We finish rotation #4 this week, and students are adding stamp songs (playing tests to demonstrate skills). They get to choose 4 songs, one each from pages 10, 11, 14, 15, assessing the following skills: tonguing eighth notes, playing in 4/4, 3/4 & 2/4 time, playing/counting dotted half notes and/or ties.
YEAR 1:
green days-clarinet, sax, flute; blue days-trumpet, trombone, percussion
Students are really doing a wonderful job, continuing to establish correct, strong embouchure and hand position while producing a quality tone. We'll be focusing on articulation (tonguing) & first 3 notes this week!
At home, students should be doing the following:
- Read the embouchure paper every day.
- Practice correct hand position.
- 5 minutes: long tones on mouthpiece/headjoint in front of a mirror (Ask students who has won the latest rematch!)
- 5-10 minutes: colored paper handout which includes Hot Cross Buns
- 10+ minutes: Mouthpiece Mania (tonguing/rhythm practice)

DON'T PRACTICE...
...until you get it right. Practice until you can't get it wrong!
:-)
Seriously, though, playing at home in-between classes is "key" to their success and even more importantly, to their joy and satisfaction in a job well done.
Specifically, students have been working at school on the concept that we must learn things slowly and accurately first, then gradually speed things up.
XYLOPHONE MIRACLE
Special thanks to my former percussionist Wyatt F (now a member of the HS marching band!), his dad and grandfather. They picked up our xylophone this summer, and his grandpa repaired the broken frame. We are so excited and grateful!
