New Era in Shawnee Athletics
Superintendent Dr. April Grace's report to the Shawnee Board of Education was an introduction of Dax Leone and Julia Holland, the new Shawnee Athletic Director and Assistant Athletic Director, respectively. Both Leone and Holland are Shawnee graduates. It was announced they will present their vision for the Shawnee Athletic Department at an upcoming board meeting.
Board Reports
Board Member Larry Walker commended Shawnee Girls Basketball Coach Wendi Wells for the impact she has on college basketball, and he mentioned several of her former players who are now playing and coaching at the collegiate level. Two players he mentioned are Lauren Fields, who recently transferred to the University of Arizona, and Makyra Tramble, who transferred to Oklahoma State University. He also congratulated Myrakle Blackshire for her recent performance at the state track and field meet and the two Shawnee tennis players, Payton Greenwood and Dymire James, who competed at the state meet.
Board Decisions
- the addition of a Beginning Band course for Shawnee High School. Dr. Grace explained this course will allow students who transfer from K-8 schools that do not have a band program to participate in the high school band;
- the addition of Spanish I at Shawnee Middle School. Dr. Grace explained this course will allow eighth grade students to complete the elective course for high school credit;
- the addition of an Employee Assistance Program with Mazzitti & Sullivan benefit for Shawnee Public Schools employees. Dr. Grace said this will be a new benefit for employees and family members to access counseling services;
- a contract for leader professional development training with John Wink from Wink Educational Consulting, Inc.;
- a lease and service agreement with Shawnee Office Systems for three copiers;
- the dissolving of Fund 22 as of the end of the current fiscal year and running all child nutrition transactions through the District’s general fund. Dr. Grace explained this action was recommended by the District's auditor;
- awarding of flooring contracts to Bailey’s Flooring Covering for portions of Horace Mann, Shawnee Early Childhood Center, Jim Thorpe Academy, and the District Office, and to Wilson Brothers Flooring for portions of Shawnee High School, Shawnee Middle School, Sequoyah, Jefferson, and Will Rogers;
- awarding of a roofing contract for portions of Jefferson Elementary to Coryell Roofing and Construction; and
- the hiring of all personnel as presented.
