Jewett Jargon October 2020

Jaguars Innovate, Create and Learn

Message from Ms. Staley

You have survived 6 weeks of Comprehensive Distance Learning! I know this is so hard not only for our students, but for our teachers and you parents. We are having to team with families in ways that we never have before and we are so appreciative of our amazing families and how hard you are all working. I know many of us are not only working full time jobs, but we are also now major players in our students' daily education. Please know that it is not going unnoticed. It's important, as parents, that you make sure you are taking time for yourself. Whether it's going for a walk, reading a book or any other activity that brings you happiness. Taking time for yourself will allow you to be a better parent for your child.

Jewett continues to be a great place for learning. The students are enthusiastic, parents are supportive and the teachers are consistently working to provide the highest level of instruction for our kids. As we continue this year, I encourage you to maintain a positive outlook and take on any challenges with ferocity and determination. Setting up good habits regarding attendance and submitting quality work will benefit our students this year and throughout life.

As always, thank you for partnering with us in our efforts to make Jewett the best possible school for our students.

Move-a-thon

This year we are doing a Move-a-Thon in place of our annual Jog-a-thon. During the week of Oct 19-23, your student should be doing their "movement"; then they have until Nov 3rd to collect the pledges. The top 30 earners will get to choose from our awesome prizes. All students who raise $50 will get a Move-a-Thon t-shirt! All money goes directly back to students to support all the innovation and creating that happens at Jewett Elementary.

Zoom Etiquette

Please help your students remember the rules of zoom

Microphone off- Keep your microphone off until the teacher asks you to turn it on.

Be on Time- Check to make sure that your tech is working before class and be on time.

Quiet Space- Make sure you have a quiet space where you can focus.

Dressed for Success- Make sure you are up and dressed for your Zoom meetings.

Sit in front of Camera- Make sure you are in a comfortable space where you can sit and focus. You shouldn't be bouncing around the room during a Zoom meeting.

Halloween

If your student has LIPI the week of Halloween, they will have a day where they can wear a costume to school. Teachers will be communicating which day will be a costume day for their students. There will not be a parade or class parties.

Message from LaClinica Counseling Office

Mental health support is available for Jewett families, both children and caregivers, through La Clinica’s school-based health center. David Smith is La Clinica’s new therapist at Jewett, replacing Janelle Chapman. David comes to La Clinica from Options for Southern Oregon’s children’s team in Josephine County, where he was the therapist embedded in two elementary schools in Grants Pass. He is able to provide in-person services at Jewett during school hours, or by telehealth in the evenings or for families who prefer remote sessions. Services are confidential and are not reflected on educational records.

If you and/or your child could benefit from mental health services, you can contact David directly by calling his office at Jewett (541) 494-6608. Your child’s teacher or Jewett’s front office can also submit a request on your behalf.

Nature Scape Playground

Jewett's newest unique learning environment is one step closer to completion. Big thank you to Quality Fence and Hilton Landscape Supply for their support. Big shout out to the team of staff that helped lay 1500 sq. ft. of sod on their day off. We can't wait to have our students out exploring and playing in our new space.

New Building

This month we broke ground on Jewett's new building as a part of the 2020 Bond. The project is building a brand new gym, maker's lab and tech center. The project is set to be completed by June. We are so excited to have a space for our students to work in, but also an air-conditioned space that will hold our entire student body for assemblies.

School Pictures

School pictures will be available November 9, 10, 12, 13. A ParentSquare post will go out this week for you to sign up for a slot. You will bring your students to Jewett and get a quick picture taken. You will be able to purchase photos online. Any student that is on campus that week for LIPI will get their picture taken while they are here. Be on the lookout for the sign up post. It will contain all the details you need to get signed up.
