Sharing Of Laptops

Hi all,

I've had many discussions today with a range of staff about this topic (the following ideas are a collaboration of ideas discussed).

It's so fantastic that we have so many staff in our school eager and willing to incorporate technology into their programs!

With that, has come a few difficulties that we will need to work together to solve. The teachers in the school that have the laptops and iPads housed in their classrooms are telling me that students are showing up on their doorstep in the middle of lessons asking to borrow the devices, which is causing major interruptions to learning.

Hopefully our school's plan for Bring Your Own Devices (BYOD) will eliminate most of our problems, but we need to find a way to share what we have to work with at the moment.

Nyssa's Library program of teaching children the Information, Communication and Research skills they need to be 21st Century Learners, is new and exciting to Belair. Nyssa really needs access to technology in most of her lessons. So if the laptops are not being used by infants teachers in the Connected Classroom, we could make them available to Nyssa in the Library whenever possible. Of course if you wish to use the infants laptops, if you want to timetable them into your programming, you should be able to have the opportunity to use them as well (as this was the intention of the Technology Hub'. Maybe we leave a timetable for the infants laptops in the Library for staff to utilise. Each day, Nyssa can lock the laptops away in the Connected Classroom. She can see if the laptops are booked out and maybe plan to use iPads or gather up the Primary laptops to use instead if need be.

Whilst we would love for technology to be a spontaneous thing where we could just grab a laptop and go, this is really difficult in a large school like ours (with so many eager and willing staff). It's probably a better idea to plan your lessons ahead of time to include the scheduled use of laptops and ask staff well ahead of time if you can 'grab' the devices you need.

Currently the Primary laptops are housed in Lynda, Jenny, Alison and June's rooms. They can be borrowed (keeping in mind that you'd need 3 class sets to have enough for one between two). No timetable exists, but is it needed? Please try to prevent sending students mid lesson to ask for them.

Ok, so, I hope I am not coming across mean and nasty. I'm just trying to find a plan that suits everyone. Let me know what you think. I'll put that timetable for infants Laptops in the Library by the end of the week. I hope it works well.
