KA Classroom Update
Introduction
It's been a busy few weeks since our last update. Our Kindergarteners have been hard at work, reading pages for our upcoming trip to Mexico. We will continue to be sending home the slips as your child needs them. We have been having a great time as we've watched the weather slowly warming up. The park trips on Mondays and Wednesdays are now in full swing. Attached below is a link to a Sign Up Genius if you would like to sign up to be a chaperone on one of our trips.
Reading
In Reading we are now finishing up the first part of our investigation on reading nonfiction texts. Our students have began becoming experts on getting information out of nonfiction texts. They have been practicing asking questions, discussing with a partner, and rereading passages. We continue to read together every day, both as a class and in small groups during Literacy Block. We are so proud of all the strides our readers have made this year.
Inquiry
We have been having such a great time in Inquiry! Our KA students have been continuing their unit on growth, learning how living things change as time goes on. The lima beans we planted have really begun to sprout, and the kids have been tracking all the growth in their very own growth journals. They have also planted sunflowers and peppers and have watched as they have grown from the soil. This has lead to discussions up the life cycle of plants. Our next step is to move the discussion to the life cycle of animals and study the growth of our new classroom Praying Mantis'. Our next step is to order classroom caterpillars in order to observe the transformation into butterflies.
Math
In math students have continued to focus on grouping numbers in groups of ten and some numbers…or a teen number. For example, 17 is 10 ones and 7 ones. Students began to group numbers using manipulatives and pictures to model numbers and represent them as 10 and 20. Scholars are now focusing on modeling teen numbers and have now moved to modeling teen numbers with materials from abstract to concrete. We have also been practicing counting from 1-100 and counting to 100 by tens. Practice with your child at home!
Writing
In writing, our authors are currently in the editing and publishing stages of the writing process. Scholars are focusing on capitalizing the first letter in a sentence and adding punctuation to the end of a sentence. They are also focusing on making sure that there is space between words. Writers will also be sure to draw pictures that match their story with plenty of detail! Soon, we will be sending our fiction stories off to the presses!

¡Dios Mio! Vamos a aprender sobre los Olmeces.
In preparation for our trip, Kinder Artists are researching the weather and climate in Ancient Mexico. Much like today, Mexico was hot and jungle like in 400 BCE. Jaguars roamed the land back then and rubber trees grew in abundance.
K Artists gathered textures in the studio using crayons and then painted those papers green. In the next couple weeks, they will transform these papers into rubber tree leaves. Additionally, they’re playing DIG and discovering Olmec artifacts to begin designing necklaces next week!
PS Artist Detectives received paychecks in April for their outstanding work collecting evidence of texture!! See below!!
Please be sure to read thirty-one pages a day with your student! Everyone is excited to join us on our next trip — 2500 years back in time!!
Thank you for the amazing goodies!!
All of your Teacher Appreciation treats were delicious (and thoughtful)!!
MANY THANKS!!
