Weekly Message
an Update from Dr. Barbara A. Russell 2/9/22
Greetings PV Families,
February celebrations continue! We are fast approaching our 100th Day of School for the 2021-2022 school year (barring any inclement weather days, the 100th day of school will occur on February 11th). Students will celebrate in a variety of ways integrating math, science, and language arts. February 11th also marks the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, recognizing the critical role women and girls play in science and technology.
Next week, on Monday, February 14th, we celebrate Valentine’s Day, which has evolved into a celebration of not only romance but also friendship and admiration. Monday also kicks off Random Acts of Kindness Week, with Thursday, February 17 denoted as Random Acts of Kindness Day. As per the Random Act of Kindness Foundation, “the work to create a kinder world never ends. There is no limit on the amount of goodness we can put into the world…” I encourage everyone to think about ways to contribute to this goal. The organization is sponsoring a coloring contest and all ages are welcome to participate. To learn more visit Random Acts of Kindness Foundation.
Finally, I'd like to send a special SHOUT OUT to our counselors in recognition of National School Counseling Week (February 7-11) for all they do to support the success of our students! This year's theme is "School Counseling: Better Together." Thank you for being a vital part of our "Better Together" team!
Sincerely,
Dr. Barbara A. Russell
Superintendent

Masking News & Reminders
Masks Required - Federal Court Decision
Per the Federal Court’s decision on February 7, 2022, the District will follow masking requirements and recommendations stipulated in PHASE 1of our Health and Safety Transition Plan (v3 final) until further direction from the Court. The plan, approved on January 2, 2022 by the Board of School Directors, was revised to reflect the court order on February 8, 2022. Phase 1 (graphic below) stipulates that masks are required when indoors in any of the District’s facilities during the school day. Additionally, this phase states that masks are strongly recommended after the school day while indoors. After the school day refers to during athletics, music ensembles, clubs, committee meetings, Community Education, spectating, etc. Masks continue to be optional when outdoors.
Mask Exemption Information
Requests for a mask/face covering exemption must be signed by a licensed medical or mental health provider who is also qualified to diagnose condition(s) precluding a child from safely wearing a mask/face covering. The information must be submitted on the school district’s Mask/Face Covering Exemption Form (version8) and presented to your child’s school nurse for review. The District may recommend possible options prior to granting a full mask/face covering exemption, such as the use of a face shield. In the event your child does not qualify for an exemption and/or refuses to wear a mask/face covering indoors, a virtual instruction option will be assigned.
Elementary - Instructional Mode Request
Families requesting a change in instructional mode, in person/Viking Academy (virtual), may complete this form - Instructional Mode Change Request- as per the deadlines indicated below.

Safe2Say
As a note, in addition to always encouraging our students to share questionable or concerning information with a trusted adult, they can submit an anonymous tip through the Safe2Say Program. Tips are typically related to a variety of challenges our students experience or witness, such as bullying, harassment, disrespectful language, safety concerns, etc. When a tip is received, the State (who runs Safe2Say) immediately follows up with the respective building administrator and the information is investigated.
