Principal's Update
What a great week to be a Hornet! We had a fantastic, but busy week here at Hermosa School with basketball games each night except Wednesday plus we host the area 7th Grade Jamboree on Saturday. Students and staff also celebrated Valentine's Day this week and Mrs. Wonnenberg's 3rd-grade class attended the annual Rapid City Rush School Day Hockey Game. From the sounds of it, they had a ton of fun! On Thursday, we hosted the first-ever high school basketball games at Hermosa. I appreciate everyone who pitched in to help. we had a great crowd and our students did a great job cheering, being respectful, and representing Hermosa! A huge shout-out to our middle school band as they did an awesome job playing before the girls' game. We also had the Patas Azules Food Truck visit the school on Wednesday to present to the Coffee Shop Class. Check out the pictures below!
It is hard to believe that next week is the final full week of February. Monday morning, Band and STAR Group will be taking their pictures in the morning at 7:30. If your student is involved in Band or STAR Group, please have them to school on time for pictures. Thursday is the end of the 2nd Trimester for students in Jr. Kindergarten - 3rd Grade. On Friday, we will host 5th-8th Grade Friday Opportunity. As a reminder, Friday Opportunity gives students a chance to get caught up with work and get extra help as needed.
I hope everyone has a great weekend!

State Champions!
Let’s celebrate our success! Ms. Crown’s 1st Graders competed in the 2023 Read with Malcolm READBowl as “Team Hornets 1st” and came away as South Dakota State Champions in the Primary Division (K-2nd grade). This means that her class logged more average minutes read per student during the READBowl than any other primary team in our state. But that’s not all – on the nationwide leaderboard, they were in 9th place during the 2nd Quarter, 4th place during the 3rd Quarter, and 9th place during the 4th quarter. This year’s READBowl had over 4,000 teams and over 100,000 students participating. The organizers of the READBowl were impressed with “Team Hornets 1st” because they showed up on the leaderboard during 3 quarters despite being a rookie team.
Let’s hear it for Ms. Crown’s 1st graders for reading so much that they put us on the map! And let’s hear it for Ms. Crown for making reading a priority!

Our new Character Counts is Fairness. Character Counts defines Fairness as playing by the rules, taking turns and sharing, being open-minded, listening to others, and not taking advantage of others. Fairness is not everyone being treated the same, but fairness is everyone having what they need to succeed.
This week (2/12 - 2/18) is National Random Acts of Kindness week! Today, Friday 2/17 is National Random Acts of Kindness Day! Celebrating random acts of kindness helps make kindness the norm. Kindness spreads, and it not only makes us feel good when someone is kind to us but it makes us feel good when we are kind to others. How do you spread kindness?
Last Week was National School Counseling Week! I was greeted Monday with signs and cards from students and staff. It was a great way to start my week!
Part of National School Counseling Week is advocating for oneself and letting stakeholders know a little bit about how you spend your time. Out of 218 students I have had the pleasure of speaking with 132 of them individually this school year. I have facilitated four small counseling groups (three in the Elementary and one in the Middle School). I have given 66 35-minute Classroom Guidance Lessons in the Elementary School and 49 42-minute lessons in the Middle School.
Enjoy the weekend!
