A Message from Kathy Maness
American Education Week
Congratulations to our Student Loan Promotion Drawing Winner!
Congratulations to Darlington School District teacher Jessica McDaniel-Thompson on winning a statewide contest that was sponsored by the Palmetto State Teachers Association. Ms. McDaniel-Thompson was randomly selected out of a pool of over 1,000 people to have her student loans paid for by the Palmetto State Teachers Association for one year. The contest was open to new members who joined the association between May 1st and August 31st, 2020.
Ms. McDaniel-Thompson is a Speech-Language Pathologist at St. John's Elementary School. In celebration of American Education Week, PSTA Executive Director Kathy Maness presented her with a check for $3000.00 on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at a schoolwide faculty meeting.
Remote Learning Survey
The Education Oversight Committee has been tasked with providing an update to the General Assembly about remote learning from March to October 2020. As part of their report, they are seeking the voices and insights of South Carolina teachers through a survey.
At this point in 2020, every educator in the state is likely experiencing "survey overload," but if you have the time and capacity, please consider completing this survey. The results of this survey will be reported directly to members of the General Assembly, many of which are brand new to their role after the recent elections. Members are frequently unaware of the challenges and celebrations experienced by teachers, which makes it critically important to take every opportunity available to use your teacher voice to inform those that are tasked with policy creation in our state.
You can access the survey by clicking here. It takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.
Calling All STAR Teachers!
The Strategies for Teacher Advancement and Renewal (STAR) Program is entering its 26th year of rewarding and renewing veteran teachers across South Carolina. Over 550 teachers have experienced this amazing professional development during a weeklong seminar held twice a year at St. Christopher Conference Center on beautiful Seabrook Island. Through grants and contributions from businesses, the Foundation for Professional Development in partnership with PSTA pays all expenses for the teachers including accommodations, travel, and substitute pay. Founded in 1994 by Dr. Elizabeth Gressette, the STAR program is the only one of its kind in South Carolina and is modeled after North Carolina's NCAT (Center for the Advancement of Teaching) which has been operating for over 30 years.
The overall goals of the STAR Seminar are to:
Retain quality teachers in South Carolina’s classrooms;
Enhance teachers’ commitment to the profession thereby improving the educational opportunities for their students;
Reward outstanding veteran teachers who have taken the initiative to grow professionally and recognize them for exceptional performance;
Provide teachers with the opportunity to network and make connections with other outstanding educators from across our state;
Renew the teacher’s enthusiasm, leading to improved student performance and improved relationships with colleagues, parents and students.
The ultimate beneficiaries are the students whose lives these teachers touch! Do you know a STAR Teacher who deserves to be recognized? Applications are available on our website or by emailing email@example.com . Teachers who have taught for at least 5 years in South Carolina’s public schools and have direct contact with students are eligible to apply.
