Limited Pick Up Loop @ KMS

As many of you know, our pick up loop at KMS is quite limited. We encourage KMS students to walk, bicycle, skate, or skooter to school or use their assigned bus route. Students often enjoy walking in small groups together or parents can walk with them the first couple of times. In the past, our KMS parking lot has experienced significant blockage issues and delays. Check and plan your routes for walking and biking. The district partners with the City of Bellingham to support families with school walk routes. Review how to walk or bike safely, especially during high traffic times such as school drop off and pick up.

Student Schedules

Just a few reminders about how our school day will run at KMS:

  • All learning will be in-person.
  • Students will have four core classes, one enrichment class that alternates with PE every other day, and one daily period called T-Bird Time. T-Bird Time will operate as an advisory period where students will focus on collaboration, reflection, and engage in whole child learning.
  • Schedules will be available for students to see on Skyward before school starts, and we will hand out paper copies of student schedules on the first day of school.

Health and Safety Updates

Our two primary Health and Safety goals for the 2021-22 school year are to:

  • Maximize in-person instruction by keeping kids in school
  • Minimize the transmission of COVID-19 among students and staff and to their families and our broader community.

Masks are required inside schools for everyone regardless of vaccination status. Masks are optional outside but recommended for crowded events. Our goal is to have a distance of 3 feet between students in the classroom. Physical distance should not be a barrier to in-person instruction. We ask that everyone stay home when they are sick. We are hoping to expand COVID testing access at school. We will continue to focus on handwashing and sanitizing.

No Meal Charges for 2021-2022

Great News! There will be no meal charges for students in the 2021-2022 school year, thanks to the universal meals program from the U.S. Department of Agricutlure. (USDA) While there won't be charges, we still encourage families who feel their children qualify for free and reduced priced meals to submit an application. There may be other benefits that families receive if they qualify. Additionally, you will start the 2022 school year in the system.

We Won!

Kulshan Middle School won a $3,000 Whole Kids Foundation Garden Grant! Our application was selected from over 1,400 applications received from across the U.S. and Canada. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Common Threads and Whole Foods. You can find our gardening and cooking resources on our website, by signing up for our newsletter, or by following us on Facebook or Instagram @CommonThreadsFarm. We have been planting a lot of leafy greens, peas, carrots, potatoes, and much more in the garden the past couple of weeks. We are looking for garden care volunteers, if this is something you would be interested in, you can read about it and sign up here!

Learning Together

Part of our Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion work in Bellingham is examining our curriculum to see if the voices and images of all students and families are represented. Thank you to KMS families and students who have sent me resources to integrate into our library or curriculum. To help us better understand gender identity and pronouns, our KMS parents and students have recommended this GLSEN Pronoun Guide. I appreciate all of your recommendations as we continue to learn together!
