Message From The Superintendent
One of my favorite ways to relax is by watching a movie. It seems movie-watching is less popular in the era of shorter social media clips and expanded streaming options. Even though opening up the door to being called old-fashioned, there is something that appeals to me in watching a film from start to finish.
Every movie typically includes some type of challenge. I imagine that a film would not be very entertaining without an obstacle or conflict. I find myself closely analyzing the characters in pivotal scenes. I am especially interested in observing how the “leaders” operate in those crucial moments.
In the Columbus School District, we strive to provide global experiences in a rural Wisconsin community. Connected to that vision, we have a mission of empowering students to be community, career, and college ready. Our aforementioned vision and mission statements are rather wide-spanning in nature. Just like in the movies, striving towards our vision and mission sometimes comes with challenges.
A theme that I observed from movie-watching is that in the end, characters rely on their values when faced with the climatic challenge. The success stories often are propelled by a strong set of beliefs. The parallel is that in our district, when faced with adversity or difficult decisions, we consider all of the options compared to our beliefs and values.
In the Columbus School District we believe all students and staff:
are valued.
are engaged in learning.
are responsive to unique learning needs.
have a place to belong.
appreciate diversity.
interacting with community will benefit all.
I am thankful that our daily work is usually not as dramatic as the movies. The beauty of the real-world versus movies is that our script is not predetermined. At every turn, we will rely on our beliefs to make Columbus an exceptional place to learn and work.
