Dance Marathon Recap
Thank you to all the parents, staff, volunteers, and students who helped Franklin Middle School continue its dance marathon tradition for a fourteenth consecutive year. Franklin students were invited to attend the dance after school on Friday, December 6th to help raise funds for children facing cancer. While most people dance with their feet, dance marathon kids know how to dance with their hearts! Students were joined by members of the University of Iowa Dance Marathon Team in a two hour “dance for life.” We were once again honored to have a Franklin alum return as a University of Iowa dancer. Seeing our students continue to give back in this manner helps keep the Franklin Dance Marathon tradition alive and well at numerous colleges.
The dance was just a part of the students’ overall efforts. T-shirt sales, a “money mash” change war, and multiple bake sales all contributed to the final total. Franklin’s fourteenth dance marathon raised over $4,129.60. Combined with our current online donations of $550, our total so far for 2019 is $4,679.60! Donations can still be made online by going to the University of Iowa Dance Marathon website and choosing “Franklin” as the dancer you would like to support. Help us reach our traditional $5,000 goal!
All proceeds go to help support children and families dealing with pediatric cancer at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. This fundraiser is affiliated with the University of Iowa Dance Marathon and Children’s Miracle Network.
THANKS to all the students and staff who bought t-shirts and baked goods, participated in the “money mash”, and most of all, gave two hours of their time to dance for life.
THANKS to our student “Spirit Dancers” who truly went above and beyond to collect extra donations. Their efforts continue to inspire us.
THANKS to all those who provided baked goods and snacks for our bake sales!
THANKS to our PTA for providing extraordinary organizational support and volunteers!
THANKS to all those who helped with the “money mash”, from the actual donating, to the counting, and finally the hauling of some very heavy buckets full of change to the bank.
THANKS to Burger Fiend and Johnson Avenue Hy-Vee Drug Store for supporting our efforts with prizes and candy to motivate our students in a variety of ways!
THANKS to Mr. Ptacek, Mr. Baylor, Mr. Kelsey, Mr. Steve, and Ms. Ryan for taking a pie in the face for the cause, and to Ms. Edwards and Ms. Jacobo for all the support in the office.
THANKS to our custodial staff who provided constant support with a smile, and even helped bake for the cause!
And last but not least, a big THANK YOU to the entire Franklin Community, students, parents, volunteers, and staff, for all of their support in ways both big and small. Thank you for helping Franklin continue to be a light in our community!
Franklin Student Council
Franklin's student council has been busy spreading holiday cheer with a community service project. The organization has adopted a 3rd-grade class in the Iowa City Community School District and making all 27 students tie fleece blankets.
The project is led by the middle school's activities director, Kathy Dvorak, "The third-grade class students and teachers are excited about receiving the blankets and the partnership the Franklin Student council was able to form".
Members of the student council delivered blankets on Wednesday, December 18. Follow the link to the story on our district website: http://www.cr.k12.ia.us/franklin-students-create-holiday-cheer/
January 17 Activity Day
6th Grade
6th Grade is planning an activity day Friday, January 17th at Franklin Middle School. The purpose is a day of collaboration and team building. As a result, we will not have academic classes that day. Instead, half of the day will be spent at the Cedar Rapids ice skating rink and the other half of the day will be spent with their homeroom classes.
Lunch will be provided at school. However, students can bring a small snack as part of our homeroom celebration. We thank you in advance for only sending snacks that contain no peanuts as we have student with severe allergies.

Bolt Closet
We had a very successful first year of opening the Franklin Bolt Closet. For families new to Franklin, this closet provides new and gently used clothing, new socks and underwear and all personal hygiene care items for the underserved students who are part of the Franklin family. We protect the students’ privacy by only having the counseling and health center staff know who utilizes the closet. Monthly we will feature one item the closet is in need of.
For December/January, we are now accepting winter items such as new/lightly used hooded sweatshirts, stocking hats, gloves.
We also accept monetary donations and have volunteer shoppers for the Bolt Closet. Thank you for your support and helping to ensure every student comes to school clean, appropriately dressed and ready to learn!
