Merit System Link!!!!!!!!!!!!
Andrew and the Spoils System!!!!! :(
The spoil system is a practice where a political party, after winning an election, gives government jobs to its voters as a reward for working towards victory, and as an incentive to keep working for the party, as opposed to a merit system, where the offices are awarded on the basis of some measure of merit independent of political activity. President Andrew Jackson's inauguration signaled a sharp departure from past presidencies. An unruly mob of office seekers made something of a shambles of the March inauguration, and though some tried to explain this as democratic enthusiasm, the real truth was Jackson supporters had been lavished with promises of positions in return for political support. These promises were honored by an astonishing number of removals after Jackson assumed power. Fully 919 officials were removed from government positions, amounting to nearly 10 percent of all government postings.
Andrew Jackson and the National Bank
Why did Andrew Jackson dislike the National Bank? Well because it helped the rich. Also it exposed the government to control by foreign interests. The bank was controlled by a few select families. The bank favored northeastern states and not the southern and western states. It exercised to much control over the members of the congress. And lastly it concentrated the nations financial strength in a single institution.
Trail of Tears
The Trail of Tears is a name given to the forced relocation and movement of native american nations from southeastern parts of the United States, following the Indian Removal Act of 1830. The removal included many members of the Cherokee, Muscogee, Seminole, Chickasa, and Choctaw nations, among others in the United States, from their homelands to Indian territory (eastern sections of the present-day state of Oklahoma.) The phrase originated from a description of the removal of the Choctaw Nation in 1831. So Andrew Jackson continued and renewed the political and military effort for the removal of the Native Americans from these lands with the passage of the Indian Removal Act of 1830.
