FROM THE CLINIC
February is National Dental Health Month!
February is National Dental Health Month!
Lifelong habits begin at home. Make dental health part of your daily routine and share these reminders with your whole family:
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, especially after breakfast and before bedtime. Drinking water after eating also helps to clear your teeth of food particles.
- Floss every day. An adult should help children under the age of eight to floss. Older children should be ready to floss on their own.
- Limit the number of times you eat snacks, especially the sticky ones and long lasting ones.
- Visit a dentist regularly for a routine checkup and a cleaning.
- Protect your teeth by wearing a mouth guard when playing sports.
- Don’t forget to change your tooth brush regularly, and after an illness.
Sweet snack facts:
Eating a lot of snacks with sugar may cause cavities.
Every time you eat sugar, plaque in your mouth mixes with the sugar to make acid. The acid hurts the teeth and causes decay over time. This can be painful!
The school nurse can help you find a dental home for your family!

Please keep the following things in mind during the Spring Semester:
Fever: A child should remain home if they have a fever greater than 100.0 and should only return to school after he/she has been fever free for 24 hours without the use of any fever-reducing medicine such as Tylenol or Motrin
Diarrhea/Vomiting: A child with diarrhea and/or vomiting should stay at home and return to school only after being symptom free for 24 hours.
Change of Clothes: All children should bring a complete change of clothes in their backpack every day.
Medication: Please do not allow your student to transport any medication to and from school in their backpack. All medication (including over the counter medications), must be brought to the clinic by a guardian and paperwork must be filled out for medication to be administered.
Head Lice: Head Lice is common among school-aged children and does not cause disease or indicate poor hygiene. Head lice are most commonly spread by direct head-to-head contact and are proven to have low contagion in classrooms. Indirect spread through contact with brushes, hats, or combs is rare since lice found on these items are usually injured or dead and lice survive for less than 24 hours away from the warmth of a human scalp. Lice do not fly since they are not winged and are not able to jump due to feet specially adapted to grasp hair follicles. The louse’s specially adapted feet make holding on to smooth surfaces like plastic, metal, or other similar materials very difficult (i.e. helmets or headphones). Prevention is focused on avoiding head-to-head contact (common during play at home, child care, school, sports activities, playgrounds, slumber parties, and camps) and by prompt treatment of infested persons.
Thanks for your help in keeping all of our students at Owens safe and healthy!
WESTERN DAY
Save the date!
Western Day will be held on Friday March 6th. We invite you to come watch their performance, which will be held during your child’s PE class time. They will be showing off their dances that are being taught in PE.
Please remember that this is a regular instructional day and students might be missing tests, etc. if they are taken out early.
If you are planning to attend Western Day at Owens, please remember that a photo ID is required for all visitors. Sign in will be in the gym.
Here are some event reminders:
· No strollers
· Limit 4 visitors including children
