Principal's Message
Dear Wildcats,
The set of horrific and heinous current events that occurred on Friday at the Santa Fe High School have left the entire community saddened and in state of shock. As a leader of our dynamic and caring organization, it has left me wondering about the school's reputation being the heart of the community. More so in the acute manner these acts have indelibly violated the trust and bond we strongly forged especially to embed safety in schools.
Our students will come to school with many emotions, questions, and perhaps fears regarding the occurrences on Friday. They will want to talk about it. The superintendent sent out a message on Friday to our SBISD community with talking points for parents. It is wise to incorporate and utilize social and emotional tools in your daily lesson planning such as community circles to allow students to express themselves. Again, Demetra and Yezenia are on hand to support any of you with presenting any kind of discussion on the topic. Our first priority is to reassure our children that school is a safe place for them.
We continue to work together to close out the year. All of the leadership team will be on hand to help you close out the year and support you.
- Please keep in mind your close out checklist.
- Reach out for support on MAP testing or any other testing needed.
- No Movies are allowed until the EOY party with your class. Keep instructional activities engaging and the learning continues until the very end.
- Watch out for an email with specific instructions for teachers that are moving rooms.
- Make sure you turn in the awards ceremony lists in a timely manner so that front office may print those out.
Wildcat Love,
Rachel Martinez

PBIS and Project Class
Project Class: As we begin to close out the year, we are starting to see behaviors escalate. It is more important than ever that student engagement be at the forefront of your day. Engaged students are less likely to exhibit unwanted behaviors. Take this time to strategically and methodically plan your daily lessons to keep the students interest high. Remember, just as you are tired and see the finish line, they are too. You got this!
PBIS:
Please meet with your teams to discuss what you feel our strengths are this year with PBIS, weaknesses, and areas of improvement. We will discuss this at our next meeting.
Panorama Survey
Spring Results
As we continue working in year 2 of our PBIS- we have more work to do to rewrite our goals to match our student data.
- Fall 2017: School Teacher Student Relationships 73%- Spring 2018 73% (No Change)
- Fall 2017: School Climate 65%- Spring 2018 58% (-7%)
- Fall 2017: School Rigorous Expectations 65%- Spring 2018 74% (+9%)
- Fall 2017: School Belonging 64%- Spring 2018 60% (-4%)
- Fall 2017: School Safety 46%- Spring 2018 47% (+1%)
School Belonging: Our students need to feel they belong at school. 58% feel understood. 52% feel that other students demonstrate disrespect towards them. 27% feel that they do not belong at school. How does the daily experience of our students incorporate more inclusivity and positivity? How do we instill that EVERY SINGLE student is wanted and loved at SSE? ALL MEANS ALL. Playbook ideas: Intentional family tree, ways we are the same & ways we are different, create classroom level Venn diagrams, organize to end bullying.
School Climate: Approx. 60% of students feel others behaviors hurt their own learning. About 40% of the students feel the energy at the school could be improved. About 40% of the students feel rules need to be more fair. About 30% of the students feel their teachers can be more excited about teaching. Playbook: Point out positive actions in the classroom, circulate the classroom more often, and engage the senses for a pleasant environment.
Safety: 76% of our students feel that people are disrespectful at school. 54% of them feel that it is difficult for them to get help when bullied. 63% feel that they worry about violence at school. 51% of students feel kids get into physical fights at school. Playbook ideas: Calling home to start the year off right, give students mailboxes in class, support students outside the classroom, responding to hate & bias in schools.
In viewing the Panorama staff results- it is evident that we need to have a collaborative conversation regarding our core values and defining equitable experiences for all of us. I have read through every single comment you included in the panorama survey. I reiterate what I stated a few months ago, working here at SSE will take GRIT, PASSION, and mostly a POSITIVE ATTITUDE. SSE is not one person. SSE is a collaborative team working together. I will be engaging each team on how we can continue to make SSE a respected and fun place to work. Also, a place where you feel you have enough resources and that the leadership team continually supports you in a personalized way. This survey is for us to continue the conversation, with the leadership you have (I'm not going anywhere.) on how we can best support you be the best teacher you can be for our students.
