The J-Hawk Experience!
Info you need to know for week of April 2-6!
Message from the principal
Each week we highlight learning going on around the building in The J-Hawk Experience so that families, students, and staff alike can see how students are learning around the building. We also give "shout out's" for students and staff to celebrate special successes.
This week, there are three different areas where students applied learning in experiences beyond the classroom that I wanted to highlight.
First, two of Mrs. Maharry's Textiles and Clothing 2 students, Tyler Remetch and Kenzie Taylor, entered the DMACC high school fashion design competition and were selected. Mrs. Maharry shared, "They were given the theme of metamorphosis and had to show transformation in their design. Their design concept was to show trees and other natural materials transforming into paper and manufactured materials. The contest required them to use mixed materials and think outside of the box. We found out they were selected as the winners and their dress will be modeled in the DMACC fashion show!"
Next, on Wednesday, the Mock Trial team, The SUITS, made up of UHS students, Jackson Fedosa, Noah Hoffman, Jacob Eisbrenner, Maya Sims, Ellie Van Roekel, Claire Weihs, Blair Liveringhouse, and Ashleigh Kistenmacher became the Iowa High School Mock Trial champions. They defeated Dowling Catholic High School in the semifinal round and Johnston High School in the finals. The Iowa Bar extended an offer for them to represent Iowa at the National mock trial competition in May in Reno, Nevada.
Then on Thursday, two UHS Student TEAMS presented at the Iowa Recognition for Performance Excellence (IRPE) awards banquet. Each team shared about their work from problem solving experiences last fall at Bridgestone Firestone. Each team identified areas for improvement then worked through the PDSA (Plan, Do, Study, Act) process to make improvements at the tire manufacturing plant in Des Moines. The Urbandale Schools were recognized by the Governor's office at this event for being the first K-12 school district in the state of Iowa to receive the IRPE Gold Level recognition for performance excellence. UHS participating were Blake Arntzen, Cohen Mott, Anthony Moran, Jada Griffin, Maya Sims, Zaiah Quirk, Mercedes Hendricks, Nick Long, and Matt Moran.
Each of these three experiences for these three different groups of students tied back to work and learning they've done at school but then took it way beyond to create excellence in the world around them.
There are many more ways that UHS students excel and shine in their clubs, jobs, and teams, beyond our building. I see them each day in the workplaces and venues around the community. We are grateful that they are making a difference. We also appreciate how each student is working to change the world each day!
Sincerely,
Tim Carver
