Mrs. King's 2nd Grade Class!

May 6, 2016

Project A.C.E.S.

On Wednesday, May 4th our school participated in A.C.E.S. or All Children Exercise Simultaneously! Millions of participants across the globe celebrated the annual event. All students in our school walked outside together for 30 minutes! What a fun way to promote healthy bodies!

TCE Garden update!

After building the garden frames last Friday, we had to level the ground where they were going to be placed. We worked with Mrs. Pugel's 4th graders, as well as Mrs. Gibson's 1st graders to get this job done! Students practiced measurement, estimation, and problem solving skills during this work time. They did an amazing job! The other 2nd grade classes will work on filling them with dirt, then all classes will participate in planting! What an awesome experience for our 2nd graders to participate in!

STEM Challenge with Mrs. Gibson's 1st Graders!

Two 2nd graders and 2 first graders were paired up with each other. They were given the challenge to try to build the tallest tower...using ONLY index cards! Students had to collaborate and problem solve to reach this goal. The tallest winning tower was 27 1/2 inches tall! They did an amazing job with this activity!

Field Day

Field Day will be on Friday, May 20th. The theme this year is "Summer Olympics" and our class will be choosing a country to represent. We will be doing different activities outside for most of the morning so please be sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather . If you would like your child to wear sunscreen, please apply it before sending him/her to school.

2nd Grade Pizza Party

Permission slips for our 2nd grade pizza party were sent home last week. Please return the permission form and $3 to cover the cost of the pizza as soon as possible. Thank you! We are looking forward to a fun lunch celebrating all we have learned this year!

We are also still looking for volunteers! Please let me know if you are able help setup, serve, and clean up. Volunteers will need to arrive at 11:15. Thank you in advance for your help! Volunteers will need to have a background check on file, as well as completed the anti-bullying webinar!

Thank YOU!

I would like to send a big thank you out to all the parents and students who helped make Teacher Appreciation Week such a memorable and special week!

We are Learning...

Reading:

This week we will be focusing on authors purpose! We'll be thinking about why an author decided to write the stories they did!

Math:

We wrapped up learning about area and perimeter. Next week we will focus more on fractions!
Writing:

We will begin discussing poetry! Feel free to have your child bring in his or her favorite poem to share with the class!
Science:

2nd Graders at Thorpe Creek Elementary will be issued a challenge to reduce, recycle and reuse. Students will be asked to think like a scientist in order to design a tool that meets a specific need. The materials for the tool MUST be reusable. We will wrap this up next week. The eggs arrived this week and then are in the incubator. We will begin candling them next week to observe and learn about the lifecycle of a chicken.

Word Study:

Word study in 2nd grade includes spelling, phonics, and vocabulary development. We will be focusing on 15 new vocabulary words. Those words are: reduce, reuse, recycle, engineer, design, environment, pollution, hazardous waste, compost, landfill, biodegradable, energy, disposable, and conservation.
