Love Your Library. Your Vote Counts.
In 2015, the Greenwich Free Library had nearly 40,000 visits from people of all ages. You came for story hour, and tax assistance and art classes. You came to use the computers and WiFi to run small businesses, apply for jobs, keep up with the news and to stay in touch with loved ones. You came to read the paper and do homework. You came to check out books in every possible format. You came to see a friendly face.
The library is a critical provider of access to technology, information and entertainment for our community. Last year, you logged 11,653 sessions on our computers and wifi and checked out 38,757 books, audio books, DVD’s and music CD’s.
We are also an integral part of the community. You came for Sunday STEAM and Osteo Exercise. You came for help with printing resumes, designing wedding invitations and locating obituaries. You came when you had medical and legal questions. You came to find tax forms and to copy and fax lots of other important and annoying forms. You came because you knew that, no matter who you are, you would be warmly welcomed and cheerfully assisted.
Founded at the turn of the 20th Century, the Greenwich Free Library continues to grow and change to meet the needs of our community in the 21st. 2016 projects include the (grant funded) renovation of our heating system and the rear entrance to our building to improve access, usefulness and safety, the expansion of our Early Literacy program to help our youngest patrons get ready for school, and the (grant funded) introduction of a new technology education curriculum.
The library provides all these services with the help of many volunteers (They logged over 4,000 hours in 2015!) and a very small staff. We’ve been successful at winning grants to pay for projects, materials and programs. We have put many donated items into circulation, including $4,000 worth of new titles donated in memory of Eleanor & Philip Donahue. We take the public trust seriously and make every effort to use our resources wisely.
Our 2016 proposition asks for $94,609, a total cost of $15.72 for a property worth $100,000. That is less than the cost of one hardcover book.
Although it is on the same ballot, the library proposition is completely separate from the school budget. As a public service, the school allows us to piggyback on their voting and levying infrastructure, rather than incurring the expense of creating our own.
To keep your library vital and growing, please vote yes on May 17th.
