English Language Arts (ELA) Curriculum

As Christian educators, we work towards equipping our students with the ability to communicate powerfully and truthfully with God and with others through listening, speaking, writing and reading proficiently. Mastery of language arts, both oral and written, prepares students to readily and appropriately express themselves in all areas of life. This year the Lower school has adopted the English: Writing and Grammar curriculum by Bob Jones University Press which emphasizes traditional grammar, parts of speech, sentence structure, mechanics, and provides practice with reference skills. Through this program, students will also be continuously exposed to the step-by-step writing process for different types of writing activities and genres. In addition, Reading Wonders English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum by McGraw-Hill is implemented in grades K-4 and is all-inclusive of the five essential components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, reading fluency, vocabulary development, and reading comprehension.

Here are a few pictures of our kindergarten classes engaging in ELA this week.

Lower School Hours

Please note that the Lower School day is from 8:00-3:00. Students are welcome to begin arriving at 7:30 at no charge to you. We strongly encourage that you take us up on that offer as it offers the children an opportunity to arrive at school without feeling rushed as well as a few minutes to visit with classmates.

All K-2nd grade students are greeted by faculty members in the hallway and 3-4th grade students in the science lab. Additionally, from 7:30-7:50, all students may visit the computer lab, under the supervisor of a faculty member, where they may take AR test or work on Reflex Math.

Before & After Care

Before and After Care will be offered to students in grades K-6th. You do not need to RSVP; you will be billed through the Business Office as you use these services. Before Care is located the Lower School hallway with Mrs. Draffen in Room 13 from 6:45-7:30 A.M. After Care is located in the Lower School playground and then will move to Wolverine Hall (W1) from 3:30-5:30 with Mrs. Latour.

Concussion Video - MANDATORY FOR ALL K-12 Students - Complete by August 19

State Legislation requires all schools to educate and inform families about concussions. In order to follow the state law in a manner that was efficient and easily understood by students and parents alike, we included the information in our online enrollment application that each family should have watched and signed. In reviewing those forms, we have discovered that many families indicated that they did view the video and sign the form, but actually did not. We have attached links to the video and the form to this email and are asking all the families who did not actually view and sign to do so no later than Wednesday, August 19th for each of your children. This will only take a few minutes and will truly provide valuable information that may serve your family well now and in the future.

Chapel - Thursday, August 20

We welcome you to join us anytime for our Lower School chapel (K-4) to be held on Thursday (not Wednesday) of each week from 8:15-9:00 in the gym. This week, Mrs. Diane Nix will be joining us to begin our yearly serious, “The Names of God”. We will also celebrate our August birthdays. Further, we ask that you refrain from sitting in the maroon chairs with the classes.
