Ravine Drive Elementary School
June 2021
As we celebrate Memorial Day, let us remember and give thanks to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedom of our country. To quote President John F. Kennedy, "As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter the words, but to live by them."
Thank you to all of our American heroes.
Please continue to read over the newsletter as it will provide highlights to some of the upcoming events scheduled for June.
Enjoy the extended weekend with your family and friends.
Sincerely,
Ms. Jessie Zitarosa
Interim Principal

Summer Weather Is Almost Here!
- Dress in Light Layers: Even though the weather is warm outside, air conditioning can make the classrooms quite cool inside. All classrooms are air conditioned. Your child may be more comfortable if he/she brings a light jacket or sweater to school in case it gets too chilly.
- Shoes: Students are going outside for recess and gym class whenever the weather permits. Sneakers are the preferred footwear. Flip-flops and sandals with an open back are not permitted because they create a safety hazard.
- Water Bottles: When the children are outside for recess or gym class, they will be permitted to take off their masks. They will also bring a water bottle with them so they can stay hydrated. Please remember to send your child to school with an additional water bottle.
- K-5 Student Handbook: For additional guidelines on school attire, please reference the K-5 Student Handbook (page 20).
June Health Tips from Nurse Lorenzo
Nurse Lorenzo is the School Nurse at Ravine Drive Elementary School. Each month she provides our families with tips for good health.
June is National Safety Month
Here are some helpful tips to utilize this month.
Wear a Bike Helmet: Make sure your child always wears a helmet when riding his/her bike or scooter.
Fire Safety: Keep barbecues, fire pits and tiki torches at least 10 feet from your home. Candles should be at least 12 inches from anything that can burn.
Secure & Discard Substances Properly: Be sure to keep toxic substances located under the kitchen sink, in the medicine cabinet, or in the garage/garden shed out of reach from children.
Follow Food Safety Recommendations: Use an insulated cooler filled with ice or frozen gel packs for keeping perishable foods at a safe temperature at a picnic or cookout.
Replace Batteries on Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Test all alarms at least once a month using the test button. Replace batteries or units as needed.
If you have any questions for Nurse Lorenzo, she can be reached by email at klorenzo@marsd.org or by calling 732-705-5890.
Questions About Travel or Illness
If you have recently travelled or have spent time with someone who is ill, please make sure to notify your child’s teacher, our school nurse, and the main office. This information is important for keeping all of our school’s occupants healthy and safe.
After you notify the school, our school nurse, Mrs. Karen Lorenzo, will contact you to discuss details, next steps, and when your child will be eligible for returning to in-person learning.
If you have questions, please contact Nurse Lorenzo at klorenzo@marsd.org or by calling 732-705-5830.
