OC Mayor's Cup Cyber Security Competition
Last Saturday, in a room filled with computers, Foothill High School Cyberpatriot Team #1 put their cyber security talents to the test by competing in the OC Mayor's Cup. The students combed through two operating systems to find hidden glitches and cyber vulnerabilities. They were challenged to problem-solve their way through technical anomalies and to solve complex problems that can adversely affect a computer network.
This unique educational competition was designed to mimic the real world's on-the-job learning-by-doing and to help students to become the next generation of cyber sleuths. They demonstrated the use of innovative problem solving to protect and safeguard the private data stored on government and business computers.

Classroom Student Teaming Helps All to Move Forward
“Antes muerta que sencilla”
This popular saying, loosely translated, “I’d rather be dead than ordinary”, could be the personal slogan of the protagonist hedgehog in the short story “La inmolación por la belleza”. Spanish 4 students recently read this short story as part of a unit in which they explored their personal definition of beauty, society’s definition of beauty, and how cultural differences play a role in both of those definitions.
A - Aidan Kelly helps 4th period understand the short story by acting out the role of the hedgehog who only thinks he is beautiful once he is adorned with elegant objects.
B - While reading and re-reading the short story, students use AVID Critical Reading Strategies to dig deeper in the text and support their own comprehension.
C - Students demonstrate comprehension by “adorning” their own hedgehog drawing and reinforce new vocabulary by labeling each item.
D - After a written reflection about the moral of “La inmolación por la belleza”, students share their thoughts in conversation circles.
Cold War Spy Games
Students in Mr. Crow’s 11th grade US History class recently engaged in, in-class espionage; collecting intel at dead-drops brush pass handoffs, and code-breaking to help locate a captured CIA agent. More generally: students explored whether methods used by the United States to contain Soviet communism were justified?
In an activity inspired by Steven Spielberg's Oscar nominated “Bridge of Spies” and adapted (in concert with Connect Coach Derek Johnson) from the Teacher’s Curriculum Institute materials… students explored Cold War Era “Hot-Spots” Content to inform their four spy game “Missions."
