Crosby Scholars Senior Program Newsletter - August 2022
You are a SENIOR!
YouScience - Career Exploration Tool Available - Free
For the high school senior the following questions are usually answered with a canned response or at least a very generic one.
- What do you want to be?
- What do you want to study?
- What is your chosen major?
A small percentage of you have an interest so compelling that you know your path, many of you have no idea what you want to do let alone what you might be good at. This is where career exploration and aptitude evaluations come in.
Crosby Scholars has acquired access to YouScience to offer all of our students the ability to evaluate aptitudes and interests and then research careers and jobs. According to their website:
Interested in getting access to this program? Contact Jenniffer Jamison at jjamison@crosbyscholarsiredell.org.
"Students who understand their aptitudes are empowered. They find relevance and a meaningful direction in school and beyond.
And YouScience Discovery is the only personalized aptitude-based college and career guidance solution available.
Students simply take a series of brain games to discover their aptitudes, interests, and matching best-fit careers. Careers they never knew or thought possible.
It’s not magic. It’s 50 years of scientific proof and proprietary algorithms that unlock career success."
Crosby is offering this program at no charge to the student and will also give academy credit upon completion.
Senior Advisor Meetings - (4 Required)
Have We Met? Senior Advisor Meeting Deadline - August 31, 2022
Class of 2023, you should have met with your Crosby Scholars Senior Advisor twice, by August 31, 2021. Your Advisor Meetings are all about YOU. If you haven’t signed up for yours yet, don’t wait–contact your assigned advisor TODAY!
When you meet, you need to bring your ACT and/or SAT scores, your list of target colleges, a draft of your activities and awards resume, and a list of possible recommenders. With all this information in mind, you and your senior advisor will discuss your college and career goals to make a plan to reach them. Get this meeting done as soon as possible so you’re prepared for your next steps!
You need to complete this meeting by ASAP. The deadline was August 31, 2022. This meeting is required for all Crosby Scholars seniors.
Senior Advisor Assignments
Your Senior Advisor’s name has been posted in your Crosby portal! If you self selected a Senior Advisor and that person does not appear in your portal, you need to contact Jenniffer Jamison, jjamison@crosbyscholarsiredell.org.
If you have self-selected an advisor, your advisor was required to attend one training session held in May or June. If they missed the meeting, have them contact Jenniffer Jamison at jjamison@crosbyscholarsiredell.org. It is not too late for me to meet with your advisor. I have to speak with them before they can help you meet the summer meeting and monthly meeting requirement.

College is Ready for YOU!
The Common App and the Coalition App are two options for completing your college applications. Check to see which application the majority of schools you plan to apply to use.
Schools that use The Common App
Schools that use the Coalition App
Then, get to know the application before they open on August 1st by creating your Common App or Coalition App account today. While every school has a different list of college-specific requirements, the general application information will remain constant for all schools on your list if you use one of these applications.
Telling Your Story: The Application Essay
For the Common App, one requirement is an essay. The essay requirement varies for the Coalition App depending on the school you are applying to. Some will require an essay; others will not. You’ll have to research each school you’re interested in to learn about their essay requirements if you're using the Coalition App.
Remember, in your essay, you’re trying to give admissions counselors insight into who you are beyond your test scores and transcripts. They should learn something about you they won’t get elsewhere in your application. There are a lot of essay options, so choose the one that will let you tell your story best. To learn how to write a powerful essay, attend our senior academy, Telling Your Story: Writing Your College Application/Scholarship Essays--there is still space available in the July 27th session.
Below is the full set of essay prompts for 2022-2023.
- Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
- The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
- Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
- Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you?
- Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
- Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
- Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.
2022-2023 Coalition App Essay Prompts (suggested length between 300 - 550 words):

Prompt 2: Describe a time when you made a meaningful contribution to others in which the greater good was your focus. Discuss the challenges and rewards of making your contribution.
