SPANISH SOCIETY IN THE 19th CENTURY

EARLY CONTEMPORARY TIMES

Economy and industrialitation:

Industrial revolution was late and slow only in the Basque Country,Catalonia and larges cities.

Most of population still worked in the fields.England or Germany used machinery.

Railway didn't appear until the second half of the century.

Steam locomotive and steamship,the main forms of transport.First train line ,Barcelona and Mataró.1848.

SOCIETY:

The bourgeoisie became rich and became the dominant social classes.

The Industrial Revolution brought serious problems harsh working conditions and child explotation in factories.In rural areas.the peasants lived in extreme poverty.Political demands of the working classes.

New social classes and the bourgeoisie were now the upper class.Lived in modern neighbourhoods called ensanches.Poor neighbourhoods with lower classes like factory workers live here.

Coal caused serious pollution.

Romanticism:

In the middle of the century,show aspects of the industrial society.

Impressionism:

End of the century,technological advances reflected this on their work.

generation of '98:

Criticised Spanish society and called for the modernisation.

Scientific advances:

Several researchers ,for example,Ramón y Cajal,the first Nobel Prize.
