October is Dyslexia Awareness Month
What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a learning disability in reading. People with dyslexia have trouble reading at a good pace and without mistakes. They may also have a hard time with reading comprehension, spelling, and writing. But these challenges aren’t a problem with intelligence.
Children and adults with dyslexia struggle to read fluently, spell words correctly, and memorize rote facts such as multiplication tables, among other challenges. But the
se difficulties have no connection to their overall intelligence. While people with dyslexia can be slow readers, they often, paradoxically, are very fast and creative thinkers with strong reasoning abilities.
Dyslexia can’t be “cured” – it is lifelong. But with appropriate instruction, an individual with dyslexia can learn to read, write, and spell and can become a highly successful individual. Reading instruction that is based upon a systematic and explicit understanding of language structure, including phonics is shown to benefit all readers, including those with dyslexia.

Each week in October, we will feature a message about dyslexia in this newsletter. If you have questions or concerns regarding your child’s learning, please contact the school principal and/or literacy specialist. Another great parent resource would be to contact your school’s Student Services Parent Advisory Committee (SSPAC) representative. Please see here to learn how to contact your school representative.

What is the ASVAB test?
The ASVAB CEP is sponsored by the Department of Defense with a two part mission: to provide a career exploration service to U.S. youth and qualified leads to military recruiters. The CEP is offered at no cost to participating high schools as a public service. The ASVAB CEP helped 3.5 million participants in the last five years to accurately identify their strengths. Participation is always voluntary and participants have no obligation to the Military or to speak to a recruiter. Information on the ASVAB test is attached.

PSAT is Coming for 11th Graders
Class of 2023 - Be Ready for the PSAT/NMSQT
Many of our juniors are taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) on Saturday, October 16th, at Lakeridge High School. Below are key facts and resources you need to know about the benefits of taking the PSAT/NMSQT. Juniors can still sign up Google PSAT/NMSQT sign up for Juniors
Before the test, students should create their College Board accounts so they’ll be ready when PSAT/NMSQT scores are released in December. Students should also provide their email address on their test day answer sheets so they’ll be notified when scores are available.
Students can get familiar with the format of the PSAT/NMSQT by using free practice tests or spending some time answering questions on Official SAT® Practice on Khan Academy®. Students should have received a PSAT/NMSQT Student Guide this week in their English class. The guide has a paper practice test inside.

If a student was photographed and did not like the image they can return the package and we will replace it with the same package of the new image.
