ALB First Friday Newsletter
Welcome back!
This week, the teachers spent time getting to know students and teaching procedures, expectations, and building essential agreements in the classroom. We will be launching our PBIS common space expectations next week and will be reinforcing positive incentives for meeting and exceeding those expectations.
This month we have a couple of important events to share with you:
August 18: Back-to-School Dance at 6pm
August 28: Fall MAP testing window opens
August 29: PTA Open House at 6pm
Our theme for this year is Imagine the Possibilities. With the new building, our recent IB Authorization, and the 30th birthday of the school in January, we feel that this year is full of possibilities for instruction, for our children, for our building, and for our impact on the community. We are using the hashtag #imagineBurruss on our social media accounts, which are all linked below. Follow us for important information and pictures--links below!
We love to hear from you. Please reach out to us and your child's teacher(s) anytime you have questions, concerns, or feedback!
Warm regards,
Julie & Jillian

New Building Details
The Burruss Project is considered a complete renovation; including a complete new roof (meeting LEED specifications), and a new HVAC system that provides for more efficient cooling and heating. This is a new system design as many of the classrooms were originally conditioned by a one HVAC unit; now, each classroom has its own HVAC system. Burruss also got a new flooring system – a first for MCS, the entire building floor has been replaced with a Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) in all the common areas and corridors, and new carpet tiles in the instructional spaces. LVT is a type of flooring that is used in hospitals so it is much more sanitary, has better sound absorption and is “softer on the feet.”
Other improvements include: new sound absorbing ceiling tiles and ceiling grids throughout the school, new paint throughout the school, new tile in the restrooms, new countertops and sinks. Burruss is also the first building to get the new water fountains that have bottle filling stations, and LED lighting that has a dimmer feature. Finally, there is a new canopy that will allow instruction to take place outside as well as an artificial turf surface area to allow for other educational and recreational activities.

The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) is a challenging, global education framework for students in grade K-5. IB PYP at A. L. Burruss provides all students with an inquiry- based approach to teaching and learning. . IB PYP instructors use best practices to take learning beyond the minimum local, state and national curriculum. All of the students at A. L. Burruss are taught to think globally and take action in the world. The essential elements of the PYP framework balances the acquisition of knowledge and skills, conceptual understanding, demonstration of positive attitudes and taking responsible action to develop the IB PYP learner.
